RuiYao,anassistantprofessorofpersonalfinancialplanningatMU,saysthatthislargegrowthinsuchasmallamountoftimehaspositiveandnegativeimplicationsfortheChineseeconomy.
“WithmoreandmorepeopletakingadvantageofcreditcardsinChina,itcertainlyincreasespotentialconsumerbuyingpower,”Yaosaid.“However,wefoundthatmorethan90%ofcreditcarduserswereunawareofsafetyissuesexistingincreditcarduseandmorethan60%hadlittleknowledgeoftheconsequencesofcreditcarddebt.Thislackofknowledgecouldcreateproblemsascreditcardownershipisexpectedtogrowatarateof11%ayear.”
Yaofoundthatwhile72%ofChinesecreditcardholderswereneverlateontheirpayment,only55%wereabletopaythefullbalance.Shealsofoundthat70%ofChinesecreditcardholderssaidthatcreditcardscontributedtooverspending.
YaobelievethatChinesecouldbenefitfromfinancialeducationdesignedtohelpthemplanfortheirfinancialfutureandencouragingtheChinesetotakeadvantageofdebtinaresponsiblefashionisimportantfortheChineseeconomy.“Appropriateuseofdebtcanhelphouseholdsimprovetheirqualityoflifeaswellasspureconomicgrowththroughanincreaseinmarketpurchases,”Yaosaid.
