Morerecentstudiesshowthatneighborlysupportisassociatedwithbetterwell-beingforindividualsinmid-to-latelife.Dataregardingneighborlyrelationshipsandgeneralwell-beingfrom1,071adultsaged40-70fromtheNationalSurveyofMidlifeDevelopmentintheUSwascollectedin1995,andagainfromthesameindividualsin2005.

Thestudyfoundthatthosewhohadlowcontactwithneighborsatthetimeofbothsamples,aswellasthosewhoexperiencedareductionincontactwithneighborsovertheyears,experienceddownwardtrendsinwell-being,asindicatedbyfeelingsofsadness,nervousness,restlessness,hopelessnessandworthlessness.

Itiscrucialtonoteherethedifferencebetweenfriendshipandneighboringorrelationshipswithneighbors.Whilefriendshipsarebasedoncommonaffection,neighboring,atitscoreisaninstrumentalrelationshipthatiscatalyzed(催化)bynearness.But,itdoesn'thavetobethisway.Whereneighborsarealsoclosefriends,thepotentialbenefitsareclear.Whilebothfriendshipandneighboringarebeneficialtowell-being,theyaremosteff
