In1872,AndersonfoundedtheNewHospitalforWomeninLondon,staffedentirelybywomen.Sheappointedherspiritualguide,ElizabethBlackwell,asaprofessorthere.

Anderson’seffortspavedthewayforotherwomen,andin1876anactwaspassedpermittingwomentoenterthemedicalprofessions.In1883,AndersonwasappointedtomanagetheLondonSchoolofMedicineforWomen,whichshehadhelpedtofoundin1874.ItwasthefirstmedicalschoolinBritaintotrainwomenasdoctors.

Anderson,Britain’sfirstfemaledoctor,retiredin1902.Sixyearslater,shebecamethemayor(市长)ofAldeburgh,thefirstfemalemayorinEngland.Andersondiedon17December,1917.
