AboutTAMLCategorization 

TAML(TechnologyAdvancementofMultilaterals)isagroupofoperatorswithmultilateralexperiencewhodevelopedacategorizationsystemformultilateralwellsbasedontheamountandtypeofsupportprovidedatthejunction.Thiscategorizationmakesiteasierforoperatorstorecognizeandcomparethefunctionalityandrisk-to-rewardevaluationsofonemultilateralcompletiondesigntoanother.RecognizedTAMLlevelsincreaseincomplexityfromLevel1(simpleopenholemainbore)throughLevel6asshown.

ABakerOilToolsLevel2multilateralsystemdeliversajunctionwhichincorporatesacasedandcementedmainborewithanopen-holelateralthatcanbecompletedbarefootorwithaslottedlinerorscreen.Ifapermanentorientationanddepthcontrolpointisdesiredforfuturere-entrywork,apermanentmultilateralpackercanbeusedwithaWindowMaster?

Whipstockacasingexitsystem.However,iffull-boreaccessthroughthemainboreisthemajorconcern,aretrievablemultilateralpackercanbeusedbelowtheWindowMasterWhipstock.

Packer)inthecasedmainboredirectlybelowthedesiredkickoffdepth.Followingamultilateralpackerorientationrun,thesurface-orientedWindowMastermillingassemblyisrunandanchoredintothemultilateralpacker.WindowmillingandlateraldrillingareperformedandtheWindowMasterwhipstockassemblyisthenretrieved.Ifproductionisolationisrequiredduringthewelllife,aBakerOilToolsslidingsleeveisruninconjunctionwithatiebackstringandaBakerOilToolsproductionpackerthatissetabovethecasingexitpoint.Whenopen,thesleeveallowsforcommingledproductionofbothzonestothesurface.However,thesleevecanbeclosedtoshutoffflowfromthelateralformation.TheslidingsleevecompletionoptionDOESNOTallowforre-entryintotheupperlateral.

Ifre-entryintotheupperlateralisdesired,aBakerOilToolsLateralEntryNipple(LEN?

canbeusedinplaceoftheslidingsleeve.ThisLENtoolprovidesforthru-tubingre-entryintothelateralborewhenrequired.ProductionisolationoftheupperlateralisstillpossiblethroughtheuseofanisolationsleevethatcanbeplacedacrossthelateralboreopeningoftheLENtool.

AretrievablepackerLevel2systemisinstalledinthesamemannerasthepermanentpackeroption;however,themultilateralpacker(retrievableTorqueMaster)andWindowMasterarerunintandem,orientedsimultaneouslyusingMWDandtheretrievableTorqueMaster,thensetwithannularpressure.Afterdrillingthelateral,theWindowMasterandretrievableTorqueMasterassemblyareretrieved,leavingfull-gaugeaccessintothemainbore.

LevelDefinitions 

ABakerOilToolsLevel3multilateralsystemdeliversamechanicallysupportedjunctioninwhichthemainboreiscasedandcementedwiththelateralopen.Thelateraliscompletedwithalaterallineranchored,butnotcemented,tothemainbore.ThereareessentiallythreebasicconfigurationsforprovidingaLevel3multilateraljunction. 

Allthreeconfigurationsinvolvefirstsettingamultilateralpacker(MLZXPLinerHanger/PackerorTorqueMasterPacker)inthecasedmainboreatadepthtoallowforthedesiredkickoffpoint.Followingamultilateralpackerorientationrun,thesurface-orientedWindowMastermillingassemblyisruninandanchoredintothemultilateralpacker.Windowmillingandlateraldrillingarethenperformed,andtheWindowMaster?

Whipstockassemblyisretrieved. 

InthefirstLevel3multilateraloption,aflow-throughdiverterisrunthenanchoredintothemultilateralpacker.Aslottedlinerhangingfromalinerhanger/productionpackeristhenrunintothelateral,andthepackerissetinthemainbore.Theslottedlinerandflow-throughdiverterallowforcommingledproduction.InthesecondLevel3multilateraloption,theflow-throughdiverteriseliminated.Instead,abentjointassemblyisusedwithsurfacemanipulationofthedrillpipeinordertodiverttheslottedlinerintothelateral.Asinthepreviousconfiguration,thelinerhanger/productionpackerisset,supportingthelateraltothemainbore.Neitheroptionallowsaccesstothemainboreformation,duetothepresenceoftheslottedlineracrossthejunction.

Athirdoption,usingtheBakerOilToolsHOOK?

Hangersystem,allowsforselectivere-entryintothelateralandthemainbore.TheHOOKHangerisacasingjointwithapre-cutmain-borewindow,internalre-entryorientationprofile,andahookbelowthepre-milledwindowthatisdesignedtocatchand"hang"thelaterallinerinthebottomofthecasingexitwindow.Re-entryisaccomplishedusingeitheralateralormain-borere-entrymoduleasabottomholeassemblyontubingorcoiledtubing.

ABakerOilToolsLevel4multilateralsystemdeliversajunctioninwhichthemainboreandlateralarecasedandcemented,providingmaximummechanicalsupportofthejunctionarea.BakerOilToolsofferstwobasicconfigurationsforprovidingaLevel4multilateraljunction,theRootSystemSMandtheHOOKHangerSystem.

TheRootSystemjunctioniscreatedbyfirstdeployingamultilateralpacker(MLZXPLinerHanger/PackerorMLTorqueMasterPacker)intothemainborecasingatthedesiredjunctiondepth.Followingamultilateralpackerorientationtrip,anMLWhipstock?

millingassemblyisrunandanchoredintothemultilateralpacker.Themain-boreexitwindowisthencreatedusingtheMLWhipstockSystemmills,andthelateralwellisdrilled.Next,alinerisplacedinthelateralwellboreleavinganoverlapsectioninthemainbore.Thelaterallineristhencementedinplace.Oncethecementhascured,perforating,stimulation,andlateralcompletionoperationsareperformed.

Aftertheseproceduresarecomplete,awashoverassemblyisruntocutandretrievethelineroverlapinthemain-borecasing.Duringthisprocess,theMLWhipstockisalsoretrievedwiththewashoverassemblypassingaroundtheexteriorofthewhipstockandengagingintoaretrievalsublocatedintheassemblybelowthewhipstock.Thefinalmultilateraljunctionyieldsafullmain-boreIDatthejunctionarea.WiththeinclusionofadditionalBakercompletionequipmentsuchasslidingsleevesorBakerOilToolsLateralEntryNipple(LEN?

productionisolationandre-entrycapabilityintoeitherwellboreisalsopossiblewiththisLevel4multilateralsystem.

TheHOOKHangerSystemallowsforselectivere-entryintoeitherthelateralorthemainbore.Thissystemutilizesacasingjointwithpre-cutwindow,internalre-entryorientationprofileandahookbelowthepre-cutwindowdesignedtocatchand"hang"alaterallinerinthecasingexitwindow.Afteramultilateralpacker(MLZXPLinerHanger/PackerorMLTorqueMaster)issetbelowthedesiredcasingexitdepths,amultilateralpackerorientationtripismade,andtheWindowMastermillingsystemisrunandanchoredintheorientationpacker.Oncewindowmillingandlateraldrillingarecomplete,theWindowMasterwhipstockassemblyisretrieved.

TheHOOKHangerandlaterallinerassemblyarethenruninanddivertedintothelateralwellboreusingabentjointuntilthe"hook"ontheHOOKHangerengagesthecasingexitwindow.OncetheHOOKHangeris"hung"off,theassemblyiscementedinplace,resultinginaLevel4junctionofferingfullmechanicalsupportinadditiontopositivethru-tubingre-entryintoeitherlateral.

LEVEL5MULTILATERALSYSTEM

LevelDefinitions 

ABakerOilToolsLevel5multilateralsystemdeliversbothamechanicallysupportedandhydraulicallyisolatedmultilateralcompletionwithfullre-entryandproductionisolationcapabilityintoeitherbore.Optionsareavailablethatallowforeitherindependentproductionofeachproducingzonetosurfaceorcommingledproductionofbothzones.Level5multilateralsofferthebestsolutionformultilateralwellsinweak,incompetentenvironmentssusceptibletowellborecollapse.

BakerOilToolsROOTSYSTEMisthebasicsystemfoundationforcreatingaLevel5multilateralcompletion.ABakerOilToolsMLZXPLinerHangerPackerorMLTorqueMasterPackerisruninconjunctionwithBakerOilToolMLWhipstockSystemtocreatethecasingexitwindow.Afterdrillingthelateral,thelateralcasingisrunandcementedinplacewiththetopofthelinerextendingbackthroughthecasingexitandintothemainboreportionofthewell.Thelateralborecanthenbeperforated,stimulated,andcompletedasrequired.

Aftercompletingthelateral,awashoverassemblytoolisusedtowashoverandretrievenotonlytheportionofthelaterallinerextendingintothemainbore,butalsotheoriginalMLwhipstockandanchorassembly.Atthispoint,aRootSystemLevel4hasbeencreatedofferingfullmechanicalintegrityacrossthejunction.AdditionalcompletionequipmentisinstalledtocreatethehydraulicintegrityrequiredforaLevel5
