摘要

《我盛大的希腊婚礼》是一个典型的跨文化电影,讲述的是希腊裔美国女孩图菈同非希腊裔的美国男友伊恩冲破重重阻碍,最后举行盛大的希腊婚礼的爱情喜剧。

影片全方位地再现了希腊裔美国移民的生活,以幽默的手法反映了希腊文化与美国文化的冲突。

本文将从民族爱国主义,家庭传统观念,婚礼文化,和接受不同文化的态度四个方面来阐述美国和希腊文化的差异。

MybigfatGreekweddingisatypicalcross-culturalfilm,tellsthestoryoftheGreekAmericangirlwithnonGreekAmericanboyfriendIantobreakthroughtheobstacles,andfinallyheldabigfatGreekweddingromanticcomedy.ThefilmisafullrangeofthelifeofGreekAmericanimmigrants,withasenseofhumorreflectstheconflictsbetweenGreekcultureandAmericanculture.ThisarticlewillexplainthedifferencesbetweentheAmericanandGreekculturefromfouraspects:

thenationalpatriotism,familytradition,weddingcustoms,andtheattitudesofdifferentcultures.

ThemovieMyBigFatGreekWeddingisatalkaboutlivesofGreekAmericangirlwhoTulalivesinalargeandtraditionalGreekfamily,Tulaisathirtyyearsoldgirlandherfamilyhopesshe“marryaGreekboy,makeGreekbabies,andfeedeveryoneuntilthedayshedies.”However,toeveryonesurprise,TulafallsinlovewithIanwhoanAmericanman.theytwowerefromdifferentbackgrounds,TulalivedinabigGreekfamily,theymovedtoAmericaninthesecondworldwar.ThefamilyconsistedofTula’sparents,herbrother,sisterandagreatnumbersofrelativesisbigandloud.IanisfromanAmericanfamily,heistheonlychildinthefamilywhichisinquietandharmoniousatmosphere.IaninordertobeacceptedbyTula’sfamilyofdeep-rootedtheGreekcustom,itisnodoubtthattheyhasstoodalotoftests.FinallyIanandTulaenteredthemarriagehallthroughunremittingefforts,andtheyheldagrandunprecedented"Greekwedding."Infact,ThefilmmainlytalksaboutthehugeculturaldifferencesbetweentheUnitedStatesandGreece,thenfromthe"nationalplot","familytradition",“weddingcustom”“differencesattitude”ofthefouraspectsoftheanalysisoftheculturaldifferencesbetweenGreeceandtheUnitedStates.

First,culturaldifferencesinnationalplot:

Tula’sfatherisprideofGreekcultureextremelydistinctperformanceinthefilm.Inthefirstplaceinthefrontyardofthehouse,theirhouseiscrammedwithGreekstatueandlargecylindrical,itlikesthemuseumdisplay.Moreover,herfamily'sgarageispaintedintheGreekflag.Intheoutside,thefatherofTulatolanguageisalsoemphasizedtheimportanceofcontributiontohumancivilization.Heoftenhungonwordofmouthis"givemeanyawordofEnglish,IcangiveyoutofindouttheGreekroot".Inaddition,hefeelsthattheGreekfoodtotheGreekcultureisalsoveryimportant.Meat,especiallylambhasimportantsignificancetotheunderstandingofGreekculture.ThereisalsoarequirementforthegirlthatprideperformanceoftheGreekcultural:

Second,culturaldifferencesinfamilytradition:

Ontheonehand,itisdietdifferencesindifferentfamily.InthefilmTulagotoschoolwithbreakfastofeggplantwithmincedmeatwhensheisachildren,andAmericanchildreneatasandwich;Inaddition,TulaandIandeterminerelationship,atthefirsttimetohaveamealwithIan’sfamily,thefoodverysimple,justcoffeeandcheesecake.Coolatmosphere,onlyfourpeoplearoundthetabletoeat,norelatives,nohugandakiss.ButIan’sparentsisinvitedtoTula’sfamilyeatdinner,unexpectedly,shemotherinvitedthepersonofwholefamily.Theyeattogetherandverybusyandhappy.Andthecauseofthedifferenceisthedifferencebetweenthehistoricalandreligiousfactors,itleadstothedifferencesindietcultureandhabits.TheGreekculturehasalonghistoryofnationalityandreligiondeeply.SotheGreeksadvocatingnationalunityandhopethatthefamilyisbig.Andasaresultoftheinfluenceofreligiousculture,Greekfoodtypesareveryrich,that'swhytheGreeksoftenholdparties,notonlyfordinnerbutforthefeelingsofthecommunicationbetweeneachother.AndtheUnitedStatesisacountrywhichisfullofthepeopleoftheworld,thecultureandcustomsofdifferentcountriesisabigdifference,eachhasauniqueeatinghabits.So,differentracesanddifferentfamiliesofAmericansisnotastrongcohesion,buttheyhasstrongindependence,sodietismoredelicate.

Ontheotherhand,theyhasdifferencesfamilyconcept.Inthefilm,whenTulatalkingaboutherownfamilypersonnel,"IcomefromGreece,Ihave27Cousins,andrelatives,myfamilyisbigandnoisyandeveryoneinotherpeople'sbusiness.WeknowistheGreek,becausetheGreeksonlymarryGreeks".ButinIan’shomeonlywithhisparents.Oneithersideoftheirwedding,theweddingisinstarkcontrast.ThissuggeststhattheGreekconceptoffamilyisverystrong,thefamilyisnotonlyreferstoapersonatthecoreofthefamily,butthewholefamily.

Third,culturalofwedding:
