Amongotherthings,Montanaisknownforitsmountains.Althoughtheeasternplainsformtwothirdsofthestate,itswesternpartgivesMontanaitsname-Spanishfor"mountains".OriginallyclaimedbySpainandlatercededtoFrance,itwassoldtotheyouthfulUnitedStatesin1803aspartoftheLouisianaTerritory.Frenchtrappersmayhavevisitedtheareaasearlyas1740,butfrom1807furtradersbecameactive,andthefirstpermanentsettlementinMontanawasestablishedin1841.MountainshavebeenthesceneofmostofthecolorfuleventsinMontana'shistory.Adventurershadoncefoundgoldandsilverthere,andlaterdiscoveredincrediblyrichveinsofcopper.AndthelastdiscoveryledtotheestablishmentofoneofMontana'smostimportantindustrialenterprises,AnacondaCopper.TheyearsofgoldrushesatMontanaleftmanyghosttowns,ofwhichafewhaveremained,likerelicsofhistory,remindingpeopleofthe"WildWest"daysofoutlawsandthestagecoachestheyrobbed-daysthatsubsequentlyyieldedthousandsofmoviesandtelevision"westerns".
