"IhadreceivedvagueanswersaboutitstartingasapagancelebrationineitherRomeorGreece.TheCarnivalballswerethenimportedfromItalyinthelatenineteenthcentury,andhadtheir'goldenera'inthethirtieswithlegendaryballsattheCopacabanaPalaceHotel.

IwastoldthattheSambaParadehadalsostartedinthethirties,butitwasn'tuntil1984thatitfounditshomeinRioattheSambodromo.ButIkeptwantingtoknow:

Whyisitsospecial?

WhydoesthewholeofBrazilstopforit?

WhydoesitseemtobemoreexcitingthanChristmas?

Whydothousandsofpeoplefromallovertheworldcomejusttoseeit?

WhatwasIdoingthere?

IwantedtoreallygetinvolvedinCarnivalsoIjoinedaSambaschoolcalledGres.EstaciodeSa,withmyBrazilianfriendIlona.TwoweeksbeforeCarnivalIattendedarehearsalonaSundaynightfrom8pmtillwellaftermidnight.IgotasmalltasteoftheCarnivalspiritthere,watchingeveryone,youngandold,sambaing.Therewasonelady,whowasvery,verypregnantdancingasfast,yetasgracefully,asalltheothers,althoughitlookedlikeherbabywasgoingtopopoutatanygivenmoment.NothingseemstostopanyonefromenjoyingCarnival.
