JohnSteinbeckwasborninSalinas,CaliforniaonFebruary27,1902.HeattendedSalinasHighSchoolbetween1915and1919.Attheageof18,hestudiedmarine（海洋的）biologyatStanfordUniversitybutheleftin1925withoutfinishinghisdegree.
