Yetthefactwasquitetheopposite.ArrivingbytaxiatourdestinationinBurkina,webegantounload.Iwasreachingformylargerpieceof luggage when,outofthedarkness,amotorbikewithtwomenapproachedslowly.Withoutwarning,oneofthemengrabbedmydaypackasthemotorbikesweptcloseby.Withinseconds,thepairwereoutofsight,swallowedupbythenight.

Withmypassport,money,traveler’schequesallinthebag,Iwasindeeptrouble.Howfrustrating!

AllIwantedwastoleavethishellhole!

Then,walkingthroughBurkina'sstreetsoneday,Iwasstoppedbyanold woman whothrustherhandinmyface.“Cadeau (‘gift’inFrench)!

”shecried.I'dhadenough!
