ArthurConanDoylewasbornin1859inScotland.Hisfamilyfacedmanydifficultiesbutitisthoughtthatheinheritedaloveofliteraturefromhismother,whowasagreatstoryteller.Afterschool,hestudiedmedicine.Itwasduringthistimethathebeganwritingshortstoriesandhehadhisfirstworkpublishedattheageof20.Onbecomingadoctor,though,hewasnotverysuccessfulsoheusedhistimewhilehewaswaitingforpatientstocomposeshortstoriesandnovels.
