BeforeCanadabecameanationin1867,theareaofNorthAmericathatnowcomposesCanadawasalargeexpanseofwidelyscatteredcommunitiesofBritishandFrenchorigins.ItwasanareawithdiverselandscapesthatphysicallydividedthemfromthenorthoftheUnitedStates.Therewaslittleconnectionamongcommunitiespoliticallyoreconomically.ThesecoloniesofBritishNorthAmericatraditionallytradedwithBritainandwiththeUnitedStates,verylittleamongthemselves.Thesecoloniesevenhadcustomsdutiesthat,tosomeextent,restrictedsuchtrade.Inthemid1800s,importanteventsandchangestookplace.
