PabloPicassowasborninMalaga,SpainonOctober25,1881.Bytheageof15hehadbeenalreadytechnicallyskilledindrawingandpainting.Picasso'shighlyoriginalstylecontinuouslyevolvedthroughouthislongcareer,expandingthedefinitionofwhatartcouldbe.Inadditiontopainting,hewouldexploresculpture,ceramicsandotherartforms,andbecomeoneofthemostinfluentialartistsofthe1900s.
PaintingsfromPicasso'sblueperiod(1901-1904)depictforlornpeoplepaintedinshadesofblue,evokingfeelingsofsadnessandalienation.AfterhismovetoParisin1904,Picasso'sroseperiodpaintingstookonawarmer,moreoptimisticmood.In1907heandFrenchpainterGeorgeBraquepioneeredCubism.
By1912Picassohadincorporatednewspaperprint,postagestampsandothermaterialsintohispaintings.Thisstyleiscalledcollage.Inthelate1920sheturnedtowardaflat,cubist-relatedstyle.Inthe1930shispaintingsbecamemilitantandpolitical.Guernica(1937),amasterpiecefromthisperioddepictstheterrorofthebombingofthetownofGuernicaduringtheSpanishcivilwar.
FollowingWorldWarⅡ,Picasso'sworkbecamelesspoliticalandmoregentle.Hespenttheremainingyearsofhislifeexploringvarioushistoricalstylesofart,makingseveralreproductionsoftheworkofearlierartists.
