BenefitsofDaydreamingtoChildren

Active,imaginativelivesarevitaltochildren’sdevelopment,AmericanHealthreports.Mostchildrenstartfantasizingbetweentheagesof2to5.“Childrenstrugglestounderstandlife’scomplexities,fromjetplanestoTVimages,”saysYaleUniversitypsychologistJeromeLSinger.Hebelievesthatmake-believehelpsyoungstersbreakdownelementstoaleveltheycanunderstand.“Unlessachild’sdaydreamingishinderinghim/herfromprogressinginschoolorfromgainingsocialskills,thereisnoneedtodiscourageit,”Singerssays.

ThreeBasicDaydreamingStyles

Thetypeofdaydreamspeoplehave,whethertheyarepleasantandhopefulorfilledwithdespair,takeshapeinchildhoodwheneveryonedevelopsoneofthreebasicdaydreamingstyles:

positive,negativeandscattered,AmericanHealthreports.Althougheveryonesinksoccasionallyintoeachofthesetypes,positivedaydreamersaremorelikelytoimagehappy,painfulorentertainingsituations.Negativedaydreamersareeasilyboredanddistracted.“Theirmentalimagestendtobefleeting,repetitiveandshallow,likevariationsofthesamefairytale,”explainsYalepsychologistRoniTower.

Whileallthreetypesarecommon,positivefantasiesaremostlikelytoserveasspringboardsforproblemsolving,whilenegativeandscattereddaydreamsmayleaveapersonfeelinganxious.“Negativedaydreamersarewaitingfor“theothershoetofall’,livingintheshadowsoffantasies,”Towerexplains.

KeepingDaydreamingUnderControl

Therearetimeswhendaydreamingcausesproblems,accordingtoBlondin.“Ifdaydreaminggetsinthewayofdailylifebecausethepersonisdaydreamingallday,he/shewon’tbeveryproductive,”shesays.“Howmuchandhowoftenapersondaydreamsisimportant.Itshouldnottakeupallofyourtime.Ifpeoplefindtheirdaydreamingisbecomingexcessive,theyshouldtakearealisticlookatwhat’sgoingonintheirlifeandaskthemselveswhattheyaretryingtoavoid.Thentheycanassesswhatmeasurestheyneedtotaketoimprovethesituation.”Anyonewhohasahardtimedistinguishingbetweenrealityandfantasyorstartsreplacingreal-lifefamilyandfriendswithimaginedonesshouldseekprofessionalhelp.
