inanInsolvencypractice,inordertogainworkexperienee.

Havingtoworktotightdeadlinestaughtmehowtowork

independentlyaspartofaprofessionalteam.Ilearntthat

inbusiness,ifonepersonlacksproductivity,theneveryoneelsecansuffer,andalsohowtomotivateothersasameansofpreventingsuchissues.Iusedtheskillslearnttoenhancemy

roleastheManagingDirectorofmyyoungEnterprise

company,particularlymethodsofmotivationanddelegation,andthesignificaneeofbeingaccountableforothers.HavingspentnearlythreeyearsworkingparttimeinaHealthfoodshopalongsidemystudies,Idevelopedmycommunicationskills,withbothcolleaguesandcustomers,andprovedtobeatrustworthyemployee.

BeingappointedasDeputyHeadBoyinthesixthform

wasagreathonourtome.Myskillsweregreatlyenhancedbyholdingthisposition,asIwouldoftenhavetolisten,andrespondtoissuesbroughtupbyfellowprefects,andstudentslowerdowntheschool.ThroughactivitiessuchasLunchduty,Ilearnttheworthofdifferentleadershipskills,andthatitis

importanttotreateveryoneasanindividualinordertogetresults.Iwasalwayskeentostayintotheeveningtohelpoutatschoolevents.

Socialisingisveryimportanttome,andIamalwayskeentomeetnewpeople.Ienjoytrying

newfoodstoincreasemyknowledgeofdifferentcultures,andmyculinaryskillswillproveveryusefulinindependentuniversitylife.Ienjoytravelling,andlearningaboutmodern

history.HavingrecentlyreturnedfromPrague,Ivisiteda

concentrationcamp.Thiswasamovingexperieneeforme,

andsomethingIwillneverforget.Musicisoneofmybiggesthobbies,andIusemusictohelpmeunwindandreflectonthings.Iusetheinternettokeepupwithcurrentaffairsandsportsnews.

Ihavealwaysbeenakeensportsman,representingmy

schoolinmanysportingactivities.Ienjoyrunning,particularlycompetinginsprintraces,butalsolongdistaneerunningasameansofkeepingfit.Ialwaystrytogoforaruneveryevening,duringbreaksbetweenmyALevelstudies.IrepresentedmyschoolasakeenmemberofthedistrictandMaccabiGreatBritainathleticsteams,particularlyintherelay.Iformallyplayedtennisandtabletennisinnationalcompetitions,and

morerecentlyIhaveplayedinfootball,rugby,andcricketleaguesoutsideofschool.

PersonalStatement

IhavebeengreatlyfascinatedbychemistrysineemyfirstexposuretothePeriodicTableofElements.Thenaturalorder

ofthefirst12elements,discoveredapproximately450years

ago,madeitpossiblefortheelementstobeplacedonachartconsistingofrowsandcolumns,suchthatelementssharingacolumnwerediscoveredtohavesimilarcharacteristics.ThisledRussianscientistDmitryMendeleyevtopredictthe

existeneeoftheelementwiththeatomicnumber32,

germanium,aswellasitscolour,weight,density,andmeltingpoint.ThepredictedelementshavesincebeendiscoveredandIwasgreatlymarvelledatthisfeatamongstmanyothers.MyinterestinchemistryhasbeenfurtherstimulatedasIhavecontinuedtolearnmoreaboutthecharacteristicsoftheindividualelements,thenatureoftheiratoms,andhowtheyformfamiliarchemicalcompoundsthatareparticularlycriticaltotheexisteneeoflifeandthepracticeofmedicine.

ArrivingatthedecisiontostudyAppliedChemistrytook

mequitesometime.ThiswasbecauseIwasdeterminedtofindoutwheremyinterestsreallylieasIexcelledinmostof

myScieneesubjects.However,IknewthatIloveexperimentinginChemistryandalsothatitisoneofmyfavouritesubjects.Idutifullyattendedanumberofcareersessionsandopendaysforscieneesubjectsatvariousuniversities,andtheonesfocussingonChemistryleftalasting

impressiononme.Also,Itooktimetovisitoneortwo

commercialchemistry-orientedlaboratoriesinmyareatotalkwiththechemiststhere.Theirexperienceshavereinforcedmyloveforthesubject.TheyhelpedmetounderstandthewidevarietyofcareersavailableforagraduatewithagoodknowledgeofChemistry,i.e.research,pharmaceuticals,and

evenenvironmentalmanagement.Theprospectofacareerinresearchandpharmaceuticalsisofgreatinteresttome.Atthispoint,IwasfinallyconvincedthatstudiesinChemistryandacareerinresearchinthesamesubjectiswhatIwantedtopursue,thisislargelyduetomyloveforChemistryasascienee.

MyinterestinChemistrywasconsolidatedbymywork

experieneeatChangZhouUniversityChemistryDepartment.

ThemoreadvaneedChemistryIwas

exposedto–intextbooks,discussionsand

practicalworkensuredmethatIwouldbeinterestedindegreelevelChemistry.Myworkmainlyconsistedofbrominatinganaromatic,whichwouldproduceanintermediateforstem-cellresearch.Thistaughtmevaluablepracticalskills,suchastheuseofSchlenkapparatus,columnseparationandrotary

evaporation.Workingwitharesearchteammademe

particularlyattractedtocoursesofferinganopportunitytotakepartinresearch.Usinganalyticalmachinery,suchasNMR,oncompoundsthatIhadproducedexcitinglybroughtwhathadbeentheoryinatextbookintopracticalreality.ThedesireformoreofthesemomentsisoneofmymainmotivationsforstudyingChemistry.Inaddition,Iregularlyengageinfurtherreadingonline,e.g.theOxfordpre-UniversityChemistry

Course.ThishasexpandedmyinterestinChemistrysyllabus.

Nevertheless,Iamacutelyawarethat,intheresearchfieldsIaminterestedin,therearestillsomanydifficultsubjectsandchallengesawaitingforsolution.Inphysicalchemistry,Chinaisrelativelybackwardinthefieldsofcatalyst

development,

catalyst

inactivation,reaction

dynamics,

reactionmechanism,

geochemicalreaction

mechanism,

environmental-chemical

reactionmechanism.

In

analytical

chemistry,

Chinalagsrelativelybehind

its

Western

counterparts

inareas

suchasinstrumental

analysisand

theoretical

analytical

chemistry.Basically,China

relieson

importforlarge-scaleanalyticalinstruments.Bycontrast,the

UnitedStateshasmanyworld-leadingacademicspecialistsandencouragesinterdisciplinaryprograms.Itwillaccordmeastimulatingandliberalacademicenvironment,apartfromthesophisticatedresearchfacilities.RiceUniversityismytoppriorityinapplyingforaPh.D.programandIchoosetospecializeinphysicalchemistryorinanalyticalchemistry.

thetopresearchinstitutestodelvedeeperintosomechallengingsubjectsandtoachievesomeresearchfruits.Afteraccumulatingcertainresearchexperieneeatanactualresearchinstitute,IplantoreturntoChinatoworkasaprofessorata

leadingChineseuniversity,apositionwhichwillenablemetotrainmanymoreacademicprofessionalsinphysicalor

analyticalchemistry.Atthesametime,Iwillalsodedicatemyselftoturningmylaboratoryresearchresultsintoyetmorepatentsandinventions,whichcanfurtherbedevelopedintoproductswithpragmaticapplications.
