　　FAnimalswhichbehave'frugally'withenergybecomeparticularlyold,forexample,crocodilesandtortoises.Parrotsandbirdsofpreyareoftenheldchainedup.Thustheyarenotableto'experiencelife'andsotheyattainahighlifespanincaptivity.Animalswhichsaveenergybyhibernationorlethargy（e.g.batsorhedgehogs）livemuchlongerthanthosewhicharealwaysactive.Themetabolicrateofmicecanbereducedbyaverylowconsumptionoffood（hungerdiet）.Theythenmaylivetwiceaslongastheirwellfedcomrades.Womenbecomedistinctly（about10percent）olderthanmen.Ifyouexaminethemetabolicratesofthetwosexesyouestablishthatthehighermalemetabolicrateroughlyaccountsforthelowermalelifespan.Thatmeansthattheylivelife'energetically'-moreintensively,butnotforaslong.
