Originalsoapwasanancientdetergent,whichwasamixtureofmeltedanimalfatortallowandwoodashesintotheclaysoilalongtheTiberRiver.Theearlysoapusedfortreatingskindiseases,aswellasforwashing.Forthesakeofimprovingscourabilityandenhancingotherperformance,chemistsresearchedsyntheticdetergentforsoap’ssubstitute.
Syntheticdetergentsareusedforhouseholdcleaners,suchaswashingpowder,cleanseressenceorsanitarywareagent.Certainly,Syntheticdetergentsareessentialforelectroplating,metalsurfacetreatment,oildrilling,leathertreatmentetc.Theworldproductionoflaundrydetergentsamountedto21,500,000,000kgin1998.Andtheworldwidetotalproducedvolumeremainedincreasingsteadily.
Anumberofundesirableproblemscomewithlargelyusingofsyntheticdetergents.Forexample,phosphatesintheingredientscauseeutrophicationofwater.Andsomeoforganicingredients,suchasbranchedalkylsulfonates,couldnotbedegradedbybacteriabecauseofthehighlybranchedsidechain.Therefore,manyimportantnewcriterions,theso-calledbiodegradabilityofdetergents,appearedforsurfactants.
