Terrorismistheuseofviolence,orthethreatofviolence,tocreateaclimateoffearinagivenpopulation.Terroristviolencetargetsethnicorreligiousgroups,governments,politicalparties,corporations,andmediaenterprises.Organizationsthatengageinactsofterrorareusuallysmallinsizeandfeargeneratedbytheirviolence,whichseektomagnifytheirinfluenceandpowertoaffectpoliticalchangeoneitheralocaloraninternationalscale.

FormerbuildingcomplexinlowerManhattan,NewYorkCity,consistingofsevenbuildingsandashoppingconcourseona16-acre（6.5-hectare）site;itwasdestroyedbyaterroristattackinSept.,2001.Priortoitsdestruction,theWorldTradeCenterhadbeentheworld’slargestcommercialcomplex,hometomanybusinesses,governmentagencies,andinternationaltradeorganizations.

ThePentagonistheheadquartersoftheUnitedStatesDepartmentofDefense.ThosewhoworkwithinitswallsoftensimplycallittheBuilding.AsasymboloftheUSmilitary,"thePentagon"isoftenusedmetonymicallytorefertotheDepartmentofDefenseratherthanthebuildingitself.OnSeptember11,2001,exactlysixtyyearsafterconstructionbeganonthecomplex,partofthebuildingwasdestroyedintheterroristattackswhichalsobroughtdowntheWorldTradeCenter’sTwinTowers.
