In1998,peopleinNaDoi,aquietvillageinnorthwestThailand,noticedthattheirfishcatchesinthenearbyNgaoRiverweredeclining.Thefishtheydidmanagetonetwerealsogettingsmaller.Together,NaDoi’s75householdsdecidedtotryanewsolution:

In2012.AaronKoning,thenadoctoralstudentattheUniversityofWisconsin,beganinvestigatingtheNgaoRivervalleyreservestoseehowwidespreadandsuccessfultheytrulywere.Koningfound,notsurprisingly,thatolderandbiggerreservesweremoresuccessful,becausetheyofferedmoretimeandspace—includingmorekindsofhabitat—inwhichtorebuildfishpopulationsandre-establishrarespecies.Butevenreservesestablishedinthelastcoupleofyearsshowedclearbenefitsfrombeingsparedintensefishingpressure.“Reservesthatwerelocatedclosertoavillagetendedtohaveanadvantage,”Koningsays,“probablybecausevillagerswerebetterabletoenforcetherules.”
