Bishoppublishedherfirstbookofpoetryin1946andwroteuntilherdeathin1979.Shewouldspendyearsworkingonasinglepoem.Herpoemsarenottheresultofhastyscribbling（匆忙乱写）onpaperwhileeatingbreakfast.Overalifetimeofwriting,sheonlypublishedabout275pagesofpoetry,andabout40ofthosearetranslations.Shewouldlookthroughdraftsofpoemsagainandagainandimprovethemuntiltheywereasclosetoperfectasshecouldgetthem.
