Abstract

Aflexiblemanufacturingsystem(FMS)isahighlyautomated,complexsystem.Simulationisawell-provenmethodtodesignoranalyzeanFMS.Deploymentofaradiofrequencyidentification(RFID)systeminFMSproduceslargevolumesofRFIDdatastreams,whichprovidevaluableinformationtoimprovetheoperationofFMS.DifferentframeworksarepresentedinthispaperregardingtheuseofRFIDdatastreamsinanFMSsimulation.SimulationsareperformedwithAutoModsoftware.Relatedtechnicaldetailsarealsopresented.Thepaper’sstructureiscompliedasthefollowingsteps:

step1,theintroductionofAMHS,FMSandAutoMod;step2,FMSsimulationusingAutoModsoftware;step3,simulationframeworksdrivenbyRFIDdatastreams;step4,conclusion.

1.Introduction

1.1.AMHSandFMS

Anautomatedmaterialshandlingsystem(AMHS)stores,retrievesandmovesmaterialsthroughprocessestochangetheirformandpackaging.Itreliesprimarilyonautomateddevicestohandlethesematerials.AMHS,suchastheAutomatedStorageandRetrievalSystem(AS/RS)usedinthelogisticssectororotherautomatedmaterialhandlingsystemsutilizedinfactoriesplayanimportantroleinthisaggressivelycompetitiveenviron-ment[1,2].Therefore,improvementstoAMHSareofgreatvalue.

Theflexiblemanufacturingsystem(FMS)playsamoreandmoreimportantroleinAMHS.Figure1de-monstratesaflexiblemanufacturingsystemthatpro-cessesmetalparts.Thestorage/retrievalmachine(S/RM)retrievespalletsofrawpartsfromthestorageracksandplacesthemonconveyorsattheendofeachaisle.Anoperatorthenremovesapartfromitspalletandfastensittoafixtureonanadjacentconveyor.Theconveyortransportsthefixturestoapickuppoint,wheretheyareloadedontoanautomatedguidedvehicle(AGV).

Sixcomputernumericcontrol(CNC)machinespro-cesspartsinthesystem.Aheadchangerisalsoavailablefordrillingtheparts.TheAGVstransportthefixturestotherequiredCNCs,orheadstations.Whenallprocessingofaparthasbeencompleted,anAGVreturnsthepartwithitsfixturetotheconveyornearthestorageracks.Anoperatorremovesthecompletedpartfromthefixtureandreturnsittoapalletforstorageontheracks.Theemptyfixturethencirculatesontheconveyortoreceiveanewrawpart.

ThisFMSisatypicaldiscreteeventsystem.Whileitisdifficulttoevaluateitsefficiencywithtraditionalmethodsbecauseofrandomfactorsandcomputingcom-plexity,simulationisawell-provenwaytodesignandanalyzeFMS.

1.2.RFIDDataCollectioninFMS

RFIDisapowerfuldatacollectionmethodwhichcanbeusedinproductcontrolandmaterialhandlingorothermaterialflowprocesses[3].WithdeploymentofRFIDsystemsinFMS,operationcontrolisstrengthenedwiththebettervisibilityoftheprocess.InFMS,pallets,totesorotherloadswhichareflowingthroughtheFMSaretaggedwithRFIDtags.RFIDreadersreadthetagswhichstoretheprocessinginformationatapre-assignedloca-tion.Sensors(RFIDreaders)collecttheinformationofmaterialwhichflowsthroughtheprocesses,andthensendsthisinformationintothedatabase.Undercertainrules,meaningfuleventstrickle,thiscouldbeusedtodriveSupplyChainManagement(SCM)[4],EnterpriseResourcePlanning(ERP)orManufacturingExecutionSystem(MES)informationsystems.Service-orientedarchitecture(SOA)andevent-drivenarchitecture(EDA)aredominantinthisfield[5,6].TheRFIDreaderscanprovidereal-timematerialflowinformationlikeprobesintheobjectsystem.Theinformationincludesitemin-formation,location,processingtimeandarrivaltimewithhighaccuracy.Itcanbestoredinadatastream,intoadatabaseoradatawarehouse.

ForFMSasinFigure1,RFIDreaderscanbesetupatanAS/RSI/Ostation,aCNCworkstationandatAGVpickuppoints.Tagsaretaggedonpalletsandfixtures.Whenpalletsorfixturesflowthroughthesystem,readersreadthetagsandcreatedatarecordsasinTable1.TheserecordsarethenprocessedbyRFIDmiddleware.Finally,largevolumerecordswillbestoredasdata
