二、内容摘要
《理智与情感》在简奥斯丁的众多作品中,虽然不是最负盛名的一部,却是她写作人生的处女作,表现了她对周围坏境的敏锐观察,也反映了作者个人成长,生活的许多经历。
本文的主题是区分理性与感性之间的区别。
艾莉诺沉稳理性,妹妹玛丽安感性热情,在如此鲜明的对比中,作者反复以相似境况对照两姐妹处世的态度,进而探讨不同性格所导致的不同命运与人生经历。

Abstract:
“SenseandSensibility”,inmanyofJaneAusten'sworks,althoughnotthemostprestigiousone,washerfirstwritinginherlife,showingherperceptivenessonthesurroundingenvironment,andalsoreflectingtheauthor'spersonalgrowthandmanylifeexperiences.Thetopicofthispaperistomakeclearthedifferencesbetweensenseandsensibility.ElinoriscalmlyrationalandhersisterMarianneisemotionalenthusiasm.Insuchsharpcontrast,theauthorcontrasttheattitudeofthetwosistersinsociety,thustoexplorethedifferentcharacterscausedbythedifferentfateandlifeexperiences.ThepopularityofSenseandSensibilityinthepresentageisrealistic,throughtheparallelexperienceoflove,andfromwhichwelearnthatasanascentwomen,sensemustbemixedwithsensibilityifwewanttofindtruepersonalhappiness.

0.Introduction
Asweallknow,itisnotuntilthesecondhalfofthe18thcenturythatwomennovelistsbegantoappearinEngland.Andsomegiftedwomenfromtheendofthe18thcenturyto19thcenturymadesomecontributionstothedevelopmentofEnglishnovel,whichevenwontheirplacesinthefrontranksofsomerealistslikeCharlesDickens,WilliamMakepeaceThackeray,etc.JaneAusten(1775-1817)wasjustsuchagreatwomanwriterinthisperiod.ShebroughttheEnglishnoveltoitsmaturityandhersatiricalfictionsmarkedthetransitionfromthe18th-centuryneoclassicismtothe19th-centuryromanticismintheEnglishliterature.
JaneAustenwasbornatStevensonandtheseventhchildofacountryclergymanfamily.Shewaseducatedathomeandpassedallherlifeindoingsmalldomesticdutiesinthecountryside.Shewrotesixcompletefamousnovels,includingSenseandSensibility(1811),PrideandPrejudice(1813),MansfieldPark(1814),Emma(1816),NorthangerAbbey(1818),andPersuasion(1818).
Shelivedandworkedattheturnofthecentury,whichwitnessedagreatchangeoftheEnglishsociety.SincetheIndustrialRevolutioninthesecondhalfofthe18thcentury,theEnglishsocialstructureunderwentrapidchanges.Theindustrialcapitalistsbegantocontrolnotonlytheeconomicbutalsothepoliticalpowerandthusthestrugglebetweentheworkersandcapitalistsalsobecamemoreandmoresharp.Consequently,peoplestartedtodoubtandevenlosehopetotheenlighteningthoughtsthatwaspopularinthefirsthalfofthe18thcentury.Literature,asa“barometer”ofthesociallife,alsoexperiencedgreatchange.Oneofthemostremarkablechangeswasintheliterarytaste.Thatistosay,peoplestartedtodislikeSwift’sbrutality,Defoe’sfrankrealism,andevenFielding’smasculinesatire.Sotheworkswiththerationaltonebegantogivewaytotheworksfullofsentiments.Undersuchasocialandliteraryenvironment,JaneAustenexertedhertransitionalroleinEnglishliterature.
MostofJaneAusten’snovelsreflecttheprocessofthechangeoftheattitudetowardsthemarriage.Asweallknow,inAusten’snovelSenseandSensibility.Thestoryconcernstwosisters,ElinorandMarianneDashwood(Elinorrepresenting“sense”andMarianne“sensibility”).AlongwiththeirmotherandyoungersisterMargaret,theyareleftimpoverishedafterthedeathoftheirfather,andthefamilyisforcedtomovetoacountrycottage,offeredtothembyagenerousrelative.
ElinorformsanattachmenttothegentleandcourteousEdwardFerraris,unawarethatheisalreadysecretlyengaged.Aftertheirmove,MariannemeetsWilloughby,adashingyoungmanwholeadsherintoundisciplinedbehaviors,sothatsheignorestheattentionsofthefaithful(butolder)ColonelBrandon.Thecontrastbetweenthesisters'charactersiseventuallyresolvedasbothfindloveandlastinghappiness.

ElinorDashwoodthesensibleandreservedeldestdaughterofMr.andMrs.HenryDashwood.Sheis19yearsoldatthebeginningofthebook.ShebecomesattachedtoEdwardFerrars,thebrother-in-lawofherelderhalf-brother,John.Alwaysfeelingakeensenseofresponsibilitytoherfamilyandfriends,sheplacestheirwelfareandinterestsaboveherown,andsuppressesherownstrongemotionsinawaythatleadsotherstothinksheisindifferentorcold-hearted.Elinorisareserved,practicalandthoughtfulyoungwomanwho,comparedwithhermoreemotionalandromanticyoungersisterMarianne,formsthe'sense'ofthetitle.
1.1TheroleofElinorinthestory
Elinorwasaquiet,softspoken,fullofmannerandbroughtup.Sheleavedareasonandmatureimpressiononeveryreader’s.Althoughshewasonly19yearsold.Atthebeginningofthenovel,almosteveryonethoughtthatthethreegirlsareunfortunate,evenhermotherworriedabouttheirfuture.Howevergetsridofallmisfortunes,Elinorputherheartintosmoothanddealwithalltheproblemsinareasonableway.
Thenovelbeginswithadyingfathertellinghissonthathemustleavehisestatetohimandhiswife.Thismeansthatthethreegirlsandtheirmotherwillbeleftwithoutaplacetostayandthegirlswithoutdowries.Aslethalablowasthismayseem,itiscoupledbythefactthebrother’snewwifeislessthansympathetictothethreegirlsneeds.ThisiswhenwearefirstintroducedtoElinorandheryoungersisterMarianne.Asusual,MarianneisbeingherimpulsiveselfandElinoristryingtotakecareofherfamily’swell-being,shealwaysconsiderseverymemberasfaraspossiblecomprehensive.
TheauthorformedElinor’scharacterdispositiontoprominentthesenseofthenovel’ssubjectandformedthesharpcontrastwithMarianne’scharacterdisposition.
1.2AnalysisofElinor’scharacterthroughherlanguageandbehavior
Theyexperiencedthelossoftheirfatherandtheirhomewithgreatsadnessandemotion.Elinor,too,wasdeeplyhurt,butshecouldmanageherpaininamoremodestway.
Thesisterinlawwasalwayscoldandbittertowardsthem,andheremotionalmotherwishedtoleavetheNorlandimmediatelyalthoughshelovedherhomedearly,asMrs.JohnDashwoodwasquitedisagreeabletoher.InthatcaseElinorhadpersuadedhermothertoremaininthehomeforashorttime,sheexplainedcalmlythattheycouldnotleaveyet,astheyhadnootherhometomoveto.Shetoldhermotherthattheyshouldbeginlookingforanotherhomeimmediately,indeed,butmustwaituntiltheyfoundanappropriatehome,nearNorlandPark,ofcourse.Shehadcalmcharacterthatguidedherspirit;shewasquitereasonableandmaturesattheageofnineteen.Forthisreason,shewasabletogivehermothersuchadviceandberespected.Hermotherwasquitedifferentfromherfirstchildinthatshewaspassionateandunexpected,justasherseconddaughterwas,aswell.Elinorhadanexcellentheartandstrongfeelings,butsheknowshowtohandlesuchpassionateemotionsbetterthanhermotherandsisters.Hermotherhadnotyetlearnedthis,andheryoungersisterdidnotwishtolearn.
Elinorin“senseandsensibility”isthesisterwhoholdsdownthefamilyanddiscussesthepracticalityofsituations.Shetoodistributescherishedwiththewelfareofherrelationsandtakesitupuponherselftolookaftertheirwell-being.FeelingafflictedwhenhersisterMariannewashurtbyWilloughby,shetriesherbesttocomforthersister,resolvethesituation,andfindoutthefactsofwhathappened;evenherselfwashurtbyLucy’sword.
