6、Abstract: “Sense and Sensibility”, in many of Jane Austens works, although not the most prestigious one, was her first writing in her life, showing her perceptiveness on the surrounding environment ,and also reflecting the authors personal growth and many life experiences. 7、 to make clear the differences between sense and sensibility. Elinor is calmly rational and her sister Marianne is emotional enthusiasm. In such sharp contrast, the author contrast the attitude of the two sisters in society, thus to explore the different characters caused by the different fate and l

The popularity of Sense and Sensibility in the present age is realistic, through the parallel experience of love, and from which we learn that as a nascent women, sense must be mixed with sensibility if we want to find true personal happiness. Introduction As we all know, it is not until the second half of the 18th century that women novelists began to appear in England. And some gifted women from the end of the 18th century to 19th century made some contributions to t

10、he development of English novel, which even won their places in the front ranks of some realists like Charles Dickens, William Makepeace Thackeray, etc. Jane Austen (1775-1817) was just such a great woman writer in this period. She brought the English novel to its maturity and her satirical fictions

11、 marked the transition from the 18th-century neoclassicism to the 19th-century romanticism in the English literature.Jane Austen was born at Stevenson and the seventh child of a country clergyman family. She was educated at home and passed all her life in doing small domestic duties in the countrysi

12、de. She wrote six complete famous novels, including Sense and Sensibility (1811), Pride and Prejudice (1813), Mansfield Park (1814), Emma (1816), Northanger Abbey (1818), and Persuasion (1818).She lived and worked at the turn of the century, which witnessed a great change of the English society. Sin

13、ce the Industrial Revolution in the second half of the 18th century, the English social structure underwent rapid changes. The industrial capitalists began to control not only the economic but also the political power and thus the struggle between the workers and capitalists also became more and mor

14、e sharp. Consequently, people started to doubt and even lose hope to the enlightening thoughts that was popular in the first half of the 18th century. Literature, as a “barometer” of the social life, also experienced great change. One of the most remarkable changes was in the literary taste. That is

15、 to say, people started to dislike Swifts brutality, Defoes frank realism, and even Fieldings masculine satire. So the works with the rational tone began to give way to the works full of sentiments. Under such a social and literary environment, Jane Austen exerted her transitional role in English li

16、terature. Most of Jane Austens novels reflect the process of the change of the attitude towards the marriage. As we all know, in Austens novel Sense and Sensibility. The story concerns two sisters, Elinor and Marianne Dash wood (Elinor representing “sense” and Marianne “sensibility”). Along with the

17、ir mother and younger sister Margaret, they are left impoverished after the death of their father, and the family is forced to move to a country cottage, offered to them by a generous relative.Elinor forms an attachment to the gentle and courteous Edward Ferraris, unaware that he is already secretly

18、 engaged. After their move, Marianne meets Willoughby, a dashing young man who leads her into undisciplined behaviors, so that she ignores the attentions of the faithful (but older) Colonel Brandon. The contrast between the sisters characters is eventually resolved as both find love and lasting happ

19、iness.1. Elinors character. Elinor Dashwood the sensible and reserved eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Dashwood. She is 19 years old at the beginning of the book. She becomes attached to Edward Ferrars, the brother-in-law of her elder half-brother, John. Always feeling a keen sense of responsib

20、ility to her family and friends, she places their welfare and interests above her own, and suppresses her own strong emotions in a way that leads others to think she is indifferent or cold-hearted. Elinor is a reserved, practical and thoughtful young woman who, compared with her more emotional and r

21、omantic younger sister Marianne, forms the sense of the title.1.1 The role of Elinor in the storyElinor was a quiet, soft spoken, full of manner and brought up. She leaved a reason and mature impression on every readers .Although she was only 19 years old. At the beginning of the novel, almost every

22、one thought that the three girls are unfortunate, even her mother worried about their future. However gets rid of all misfortunes, Elinor put her heart into smooth and deal with all the problems in a reasonable way.The novel begins with a dying father telling his son that he must leave his estate to

23、 him and his wife. This means that the three girls and their mother will be left without a place to stay and the girls without dowries. As lethal a blow as this may seem, it is coupled by the fact the brothers new wife is less than sympathetic to the three girls needs. This is when we are first intr

24、oduced to Elinor and her younger sister Marianne. As usual, Marianne is being her impulsive self and Elinor is trying to take care of her familys well-being, she always considers every member as far as possible comprehensive.The author formed Elinors character disposition to prominent the sense of t

25、he novels subject and formed the sharp contrast with Mariannes character disposition.1.2 Analysis of Elinors character through her language and behaviorThey experienced the loss of their father and their home with great sadness and emotion. Elinor, too, was deeply hurt, but she could manage her pain

26、 in a more modest way.The sister in law was always cold and bitter towards them ,and her emotional mother wished to leave the Nor land immediately although she loved her home dearly, as Mrs. John Dash wood was quite disagreeable to her. In that case Elinor had persuaded her mother to remain in the h

27、ome for a short time, she explained calmly that they could not leave yet, as they had no other home to move to .She told her mother that they should begin looking for another home immediately, indeed, but must wait until they found an appropriate home, near Nor land Park, of course. She had calm cha

28、racter that guided her spirit; she was quite reasonable and matures at the age of nineteen. For this reason, she was able to give her mother such advice and be respected. Her mother was quite different from her first child in that she was passionate and unexpected, just as her second daughter was, a

29、s well. Elinor had an excellent heart and strong feelings, but she knows how to handle such passionate emotions better than her mother and sisters. Her mother had not yet learned this, and her younger sister did not wish to learn.Elinor in “sense and sensibility” is the sister who holds down the fam

30、ily and discusses the practicality of situations. She too distributes cherished with the welfare of her relations and takes it up upon herself to look after their well-being. Feeling afflicted when her sister Marianne was hurt by Willoughby, she tries her best to comfort her sister, resolve the situ

31、ation, and find out the facts of what happened; even herself was hurt by Lucys word.“Willoughby soon left the party and Elinor was relieved for her sister .Marianne desired to leave immediately, so Elinor informed Lady Middleton that Marianne was quite ill. They then returned home, and Marianne went

32、 to her room immediately, wishing only to be alone.” “And you really believe they will soon be married?” Elinor asked, quite bothered. “I thought it had been only a joke, but your question is quite serious. I do hope you will stop with these questions, as my sister has no plans to marry Mr. Willoughby. You are mistaken, and you are unkind to declare such false reports, though you w
