a.Referringtosomethingmentionedbefore
Ingeneral,thehasthesamemeaningwhenusedwithpluralcountablenounsaswhenusedwithsingularcountablenouns.Forinstance,theisusedwithpluralcountablenounswhenreferringtosomethingwhichhasbeenmentionedbefore.
e.g.Fallenleavescoveredtheground.Theleavesrustledaswewalked.
Intheorchardwereapplesandpears.Theappleswerenearlyripe.
Thedoorsopened,andstudentsandteachersbeganleavingthebuilding.Thestudentsweretalkingandlaughing.
Intheseexamples,thefirsttimethewordsleaves,applesandstudentsappear,theyarenotprecededbydeterminers,becausethethingsreferredtohavenotbeenmentionedpreviously.Thesecondtimethewordsleaves,applesandstudentsappear,theyareprecededbythe,sincethethingsreferredtohavealreadybeenmentioned.
