I'vetalkedalotaboutyourgovernment'sresponsibilityforsettinghighstandards,andsupportingteachersandprincipals,andturningaroundschoolsthataren'tworking,wherestudentsaren'tgettingtheopportunitiesthattheydeserve.

Butattheendoftheday,wecanhavethemostdedicatedteachers,themostsupportiveparents,thebestschoolsintheworld--andnoneofitwillmakeadifference,noneofitwillmatterunlessallofyoufulfillyourresponsibilities,unlessyoushowuptothoseschools,unlessyoupay

attentiontothoseteachers,unlessyoulistentoyourparentsandgrandparentsandotheradultsandputinthehardworkittakesto

Andthisisn'tjustimportantforyourownlifeandyourownfuture.Whatyoumakeofyoureducationwilldecidenothinglessthanthefutureofthiscountry.ThefutureofAmericadependsonyou.Whatyou'relearninginschooltodaywilldeterminewhetherweasanationcanmeetourgreatestchallengesinthefuture.

Igetit.Iknowwhatit'slike.MyfatherleftmyfamilywhenIwastwoyearsold,andIwasraisedbyasinglemomwhohadtoworkandwhostruggledattimestopaythebillsandwasn'talwaysabletogiveusthethingsthatotherkidshad.ThereweretimeswhenImissedhavinga

fatherinmylife.ThereweretimeswhenIwaslonelyandIfeltlikeIdidn'tfitin.

SoIwasn'talwaysasfocusedasIshouldhavebeenonschool,andIdidsomethingsI'mnotproudof,andIgotinmoretroublethanIshouldhave.Andmylifecouldhaveeasilytakenaturnfortheworse.
