EmilyDickinsonwasbornonDecember10,1830,inAmherst,Massachusetts.Sheattendedschoolforonlyoneyear.Throughouthalife,sheseldomleftherhomeandvisitorswerefew.Shelivedinalmostcompleteisolationfromtheoutsideworld.

SheadmiredthepoetryofRobertandElizabethBarrettBrowning,aswellasJohnKeatsThoughshewasdissuaded(劝阻)fromreadingthepoetryofhercontemporaryWaltWhitmanbyrumorsofitsdisgracefulness,thetwopoetsarcnowconnectedbydiedistinguishedplacetheyholdasthefoundersofauniquelyAmericanpoeticvoice.
