learningmotivations,studymethodsandattitudestowardsdifficultiesfortheend,hereasketchofEnglishlearnerscanbedrawnwithspecificanalysesandcomments.

Inthefirstplace,tolearnaforeignlanguagemeansthevarietyofsourcesforitdifferingfromindividualtoindividual,whichmaycountonthreevariants:

Forasecond,tolearnaforeignlanguage,peoplemaytakeupmultitudinousstrategiestomakegreateffortsonstudy,amongwhichthetraditionalfourapproachesoflistening,speaking,readingandwritingshouldholdsway.WhenagroupofstudentswouldliketogiveprioritytoreadingandwritingfortheStandardWrittenEnglish,othersmaydependuponaudioandoralpractice.Theformer,moreoftenthannot,aretoomuchconvincedoftheconventionalwayoflearninglanguagesbyintensivereading,esp.readingbetweenlines,orsuchextensivereadingmethodsasskimmingandscanning.Fastreadinghasevenbecomeakindoflearningtechniqueforthisgroupofstudentsandevenexperts.Andthemostimportantisthattheselearnersbelievefirmlyreadingasthebestinputtostimulatespeakingandwriting,andlisteningalsomerelyisplayeddownasasupplementaryhelpforreading.Incontrast,thelatterputmoreemphasisonhands-onpracticeinbothEnglishconversationsanddialoguesandspeeches.Inthatsense,itisnotuncommontowitnessmanystudentsofthisbeliefwalkingwhilelisteningtoEnglishmusicandpopularsongs,watchingmotionpicturesinEnglish,listeningtoradiochannelssuchasVOAorBBC,orfishingforforeignersasalanguagepartneratacollegeEnglishcorner.SomeofthemhavevirtuallyachievedalotforinthepasttheChineselinguisticscommunityseemtohavebeenmoreandmoreawareofitsreasonablenessinachievingsuccessinlearningthelanguage.AroundusstillcomesanothergroupofEnglishlearnerswhoseemtobemuchmoreproficientatstudyfortheyfocuswiselyontheperfectmarriageofthefourskillsandtrytocombinethemwithcross-culturalperspectivesduringthestudy.Theyaccentuatethenatureoflanguageastheimplicationofshadesinmeaningofwordsandofcultureasthedemonstrationofnuancesineachlanguage.Sotheytakealotofnerve,forexample,tocentreonthesamenoveloressaywhentheylisten,speak,readandwrite,andtrytomakesurethat,notonlydoesthe
