InancientGreeceathleticfestivalswereveryimportantandhadstrongreligiousassociations.TheOlympianathleticfestival,heldeveryfouryearsinhonourofZeus,eventuallylostitslocalcharacter,becamefirstanationalevent,andthen,aftertherulesagainstforeignpetitorshadbeenwaived,international.NooneknowsexactlyhowfarbacktheOlympicGamesgo,butsomeofficialrecordsdatefrom776B.C.

TheGamestookplaceinAugustontheplainbyMountOlympus.ManythousandsofspectatorsgatheredfromallpartsofGreece,butmarriedwomenanddishonouredpersonswerenotallowedtopete.Theexactsequenceofeventsisuncertain,buteventsincludedboy’sgymnastics,horse-racing,fieldeventssuchasdiscusandjavelinthrowing,andtheveryimportantfootraces.Therewasalsoboxingandwrestlingandspecialtestsofvariedabilitysuchasthepentathlon,thewinnerofwhichexcelledinrunning,jumping,discusandjavelinthrowingandwrestling.Theeveningofthethirddaywasdevotedtosacrificialofferingstotheheroesoftheday,andthefourthday,thatofthefullmoon,wassetasideasaholyday.Onthesixthandlastday,allthevictorswerecrownedwithholygarlandsofwildolivefromasacredwood.

Afteranuninterruptedhistoryofalmost1200years,theGameswereabolishedinA.D.394,thechristianera,becauseoftheirpaganorigin.Itwasover1500yearsbeforetherewasanothersuchinternationalathleticgathering.TheGreekinstituationwasrevivedin1896andthefirstsmallmeetingtookplaceinAthens.

Nowadays,theGamesareheldindifferentcountriesinturn.Thehostcountryprovidesvastfacilities,includingastadium,swimmingpoolsandlivingacmodation,butpetingcountriespaytheirownathletes’expenses.Athleticcontestsarestillthemainfeature,butnowmanymoresportsarerepresented,womenpete,theancientpentathlon,forexample,hasbeenmodifiedintoamoreprehensivetest,andthemarathonraces,initiatedin1896,arenowacelebratedevent.

TheOlympicsstartwiththearrivalinthestadiumofatorch,lightedonMountOlympusbythesun’srays.Itiscarriedbyasuccessionofrunnerstothestadium.ThetorchsymbolizesthecontinuationoftheancientGreekathleticideals,anditburnsthroughoutthegamesuntiltheclosingceremony.Thewell-knownOlympicFlag,however,isamodernconception:

thefiveinterlockingringssymbolizetheunitingofallfivecontinentsparticipatingintheGames.
