There’sachancethatyou’veneverevenheardofAmericanIndians.That’sbecausetherearen’tverymanyleft.WhentheEuropeansettlementofNorthAmericabegan,therewere

fierceconflictsbetweenthesettlersfromoverseasandthesenativepeoples.AftertheBritishgovernmentandmilitarywereexpelled(赶走)intheRevolutionaryWar,conflictswithnativescontinuedasthestateswerecreatedthatwouldlatermakeuptheUS.Intheseconflicts,millionsofnativeswerekilled.

In1830,PresidentAndrewJacksonsignedtheIndianRemovalAct.ThisactrequiredallIndianstomigratetothewestoftheMississippiRivertoallowfortheexpansionoftheUS.AmericanIndiansweretreatedasamilitary“enemy”until1924,whenthefewIndiansstillaliveatthatpointweregrantedUScitizenship.ThatwasthefirsttimethattheUSgovernmentformallyrecognizedIndiansashumanbeings.

WhilethestoryoftheAmericanIndianshasbeenasadone,thesepeoples’legacies(遗产)arestillfelteverydayintheUS.ManyUSgeographicalnamescomefromIndianlanguages,suchasOhio,Topeka,Kansas,andthePotomacRiver.Atthesametime,therearenumeroussuccessfulacademicsandotherimportantUSleaderswhoaredescendedfromIndians.Andnowadays,moreandmorehistoryclassesinUSpublicschoolsareeducatingstudentsabouthowIndianssufferedduringthesettlementoftheUS.Iwasluckyenoughtotakesuchahistoryclassinhighschool.Isincerelybelievethatifwewantabetterfuture,wemustlookcarefullyandhonestlyatthepast.
