Intheearly1990s,MadanKataria,anIndiandoctorwhoworkedinMumbai,becameinterestedinthegrowingbodyofscientificevidenceshowingthatlaughterisextremelybeneficialtohumanhealth.Hemadeadecisionthatmorelaughterwasneededtoimprovehealthanddealwiththestressofmodernliving.
In1995,whilewritinganarticleforahealthjournal,Dr.Katariadiscoveredmanymodernscientificstudiesdescribingthebenefitsoflaughteronthehumanmindandbody.Inparticular,hewasimpressedbyNormanCousins’bookAnatomyofanIllnessandtheresearchworkbyDr.LeeBerk.Thenhebegantofield-testtheeffectoflaughteronhimselfandothers.
Startingwithjustfivepeople,onMarch13,1995,atapublicparkinhisneighborhood,Dr.Katariastartedthefirstlaughterclub.Theylaughedtogetherintheparktotheamusementofbystanders,andthesmallgroupquicklygrewtomorethan50peoplewithinafewdays.Intheearlymeetings,theystoodinacirclewithonepersoninthecentertotellajokeorafunnystory.Everybodyenjoyedthemselvesandfeltgoodfortherestoftheday.However,aftertwoweeks,theirjokesandstoriesranout.Somecomplainedthatitwouldbebettertodiscontinuetheclubthantocontinuewithoutanyjokes.Dr.Katariaaskedtheclubmemberstogivehimonedaytodevelopabreakthroughthatwouldsolvetheproblem.
