Customerserviceisnormallydefinedastheserviceprovidedtothecustomerfromthetimetheorderisplacedtilltheorderisdelivered.Infact,itismuchmorethanthis.Itcontainseveryaspectoftherelationshipbetweenthemanufacturer,supplierandcustomer.Underthisdefinitionitincludesprice,productrangeonoffer,after-salesservice,productavailability,inotherwords,thetotalactivityofservicingthecustomer.

Almostnocompanyprovidesallitscustomerswiththesamelevelofcustomerservice.Theservicecontainstwomajorelements----basicserviceandvalue-addedservice.Basicservicereferstothebasicleveldeliveredtoallcustomers,whetherlessprofitableormostprofitable,theyshouldreceiveservicenotlowerthanthislevel.

Inadditiontobasicservice,firmssometimesofferextraservicesuchaspersonalpackagetocertaincustomers,whoareconsideredaskeycustomersbythefirm.Suchserviceexceedingthebasicleveliscalledvalue-addedcustomers.Oncethefirmsdecidetoprovidevalue-addedserviceforcustomers,theyareimmediatelyinvolvedintheactivitiesofcustomizing.Ofcourse,firmshavetoundertakebasicservicepromisebeforeengaginginvalue-addedservice.
