HosseiniwasborninKabul,Afghanistan.Hisfatherworkedasadiplomat,andwhenHosseiniwas11yearsold,thefamilymovedtoFrance;fouryearslater,theyappliedforasylumintheUnitedStates,wherehelaterbecameacitizen.HosseinididnotreturntoAfghanistanuntil2001attheageof36,wherehe"feltlikeatouristinhisowncountry".

HosseinivisitedAfghanistanin2003,and"heardsomanystoriesaboutwhathappenedtowomen,thetragediesthattheyhadendured,thedifficulties,thegender-basedviolencethattheyhadsuffered,thediscrimination,thebeingbarredfromactivelifeduringtheTaliban,havingtheirmovementrestricted,beingbannedessentiallyfrompracticingtheirlegal,socialrights,politicalrights".ThismotivatedhimtowriteanovelcenteredontwoAfghanwomen.

Inaninterview,KhaledHosseiniexplains,"IwassearchingforEnglishtranslationsofpoemsaboutKabul,foruseinascenewhereacharacterbemoansleavinghisbelovedcity,whenIfoundthisparticularverse.IrealizedthatIhadfoundnotonlytherightlineforthescene,butalsoanevocativetitleinthephrase'athousandsplendidsuns,'whichappearsinthenext-to-laststanza."

PartTwointroducesLaila.SheisagirlgrowingupinKabulwhoisclosefriendswithTariq,aboylivinginherneighborhood.TheyeventuallydeveloparomanticrelationshipdespitebeingawareofthesocialboundariesbetweenmenandwomeninAfghansociety.WarcomestoAfghanistan,andKabulisbombardedbyrocketattacks.Tariq'sfamilydecidestoleavethecity,andtheemotionalfarewellbetweenLailaandTariqculminateswiththemmakinglove.Laila'sfamilyalsodecidestoleaveKabul,butastheyarepackingarocketdestroysthehouse,killingherparentsandseverelyinjuringLaila.LailaissubsequentlytakeninbyRasheedandMariam.

Afterrecoveringfromherinjuries,LailadiscoversthatsheispregnantwithTariq'schild.AfterbeinginformedbyAbdulSharifthatTariqhasdied,sheagreestomarryRasheed,amaneagertohaveayoungandattractivesecondwifeinhopesofhavingasonwithher.WhenLailagivesbirthtoadaughter,Aziza,Rasheedisdispleasedandsuspicious.ThisresultsinhimbecomingabusivetowardsLaila.MariamandLailaeventuallybecomeconfidantsandbestfriends.TheyplantorunawayfromRasheedandleaveKabulbutarecaughtatthebusstation.Rasheedbeatsthemanddeprivesthemofwaterforseveraldays,almostkillingAziza.

Afewyearslater,LailagivesbirthtoZalmai,Rasheed'sson.The?
