informationabouttheauthorandhistimes,asummaryofthebook,andcommentsonit.
Abriefaccountoftheauthor’slifeshouldbegiventogetherwithadescriptionofhistimes.Thelattershouldincludethecircumstancesthatledtothewritingofthebookunderdiscussionandthehistoricalandsocialbackgroundrelatedtothecontentofthebook.Tomakethesethingsclear,thewriterperhapsneedstoreadsomereferencematerial,suchasbiographiesoftheauthorandhistoriesoftheperioddescribedinthebook.
Asummaryshouldbeself-contained,clear,andeasytounderstand.Aboveall,itshouldbeobjective.Commentsonandcriticismsofthebookshouldnotbemixedwiththesummary;theycanbelefttothethirdpart.Thesummaryofanoveloraplayisusuallywritteninthepresenttense,whilethatofnonfiction,inthetenseoftheoriginalwork:
