  Howtowriteabookreport?

  Bookreportsmayberequiredbyteacherswhowanttoknowwhethertheirstudentshavereadthebooksassignedandhowwelltheyunderstandthosebooks.Iftheyarenotrequired,studentsmayaswellwriteoneortwoforthemselves,forwritingbookreportshelpsstudentstoimprovetheirreadingcomprehensionandtheirabilitytoanalyzeandevaluatebooks.Moreover,itisverygoodpractice.

  Generallyspeaking,abookreportconsistsofthefollowingthreemainparts:

informationabouttheauthorandhistimes,asummaryofthebook,andcommentsonit.

  Abriefaccountoftheauthor’slifeshouldbegiventogetherwithadescriptionofhistimes.Thelattershouldincludethecircumstancesthatledtothewritingofthebookunderdiscussionandthehistoricalandsocialbackgroundrelatedtothecontentofthebook.Tomakethesethingsclear,thewriterperhapsneedstoreadsomereferencematerial,suchasbiographiesoftheauthorandhistoriesoftheperioddescribedinthebook.

  Asummaryshouldbeself-contained,clear,andeasytounderstand.Aboveall,itshouldbeobjective.Commentsonandcriticismsofthebookshouldnotbemixedwiththesummary;theycanbelefttothethirdpart.Thesummaryofanoveloraplayisusuallywritteninthepresenttense,whilethatofnonfiction,inthetenseoftheoriginalwork:

  Commentsonandevaluationofthebookformthethirdandmostimportantpartofabookreport.Inthispartthewriterexpresseshisorherownviewsonthebook,namesitsmeritsanddemerits,anddiscussesitsrelevancetothepresenttime.Thediscussionshouldofcoursecenteronthecontentofthebook,buttheauthor’sstyleandtechniquesofpresentation,ifinteresting,canalsobetouchedupon.

  Asummaryisabriefrestatementoftheessentialthoughtofalongercomposition,anoveloraplay.Itreproducesthethemeoftheoriginalwithasfewwordsaspossible.Whenonewritesasummary,oneshouldnotinterpretorcomment.Allonehastodoistogivethegistoftheauthor’sexactandessentialmeaning.

  C.Simplifythedescriptions.Iftherearetensentencesdescribingapersonoranobject,itwillbeenoughtokeeponeortwointhesummary.

  D.Eliminateallrepetitions.

  E.Compresswordysentencesandchangephrasestowords.

  2.Thesummaryshouldbeallinyourownwords.Itmustnotbeapatchworkmadeupofphrasesandsentencesquotedfromtheoriginalpassage.

  3.Youshouldfollowthelogicalorderoftheoriginalpassage.Ideasandfactsneednotberearranged.

  4.Thesummaryshouldbeself-contained,thatis,itmustconveythemessageoftheoriginalfullyandclearly,sothatyourreaderneedsnoreferencetotheoriginaltounderstandwhatitsmainideasare.
