NormanBethunewasbornin1890.Hebecameadoctorin1916andwenttoSpainin1936totreatthewoundedsoldiersduringthewarthere.Hesoonrealisedthatmanypeopleweredyingbecausetheydidnotgettohospitalquicklyenough.DrBethunedevelopednewwaysoftakingcareofthesick.Heinventedspecialmedicaltoolstouseoutsidehospitalsandchosetothefightingareassothatdoctorscouldtreatthewoundedmorequickly.Hisinventionssavedmanylives.

In1938,DrBethunecametoChinaandhelpedtreatthewoundedduringtheAntiJapaneseWar.Atthattime,therewerefewdoctors,sohehadtoworkveryhardonhisown.HisexperienceoftreatingpeopleinSpainwasUsefulinChina.Hedevelopedtrainingcoursesforlocaldoctorsandnurses,andwrotebookssothattheycouldlearnabouthowhetreatedthesick.
