ManyolderAmericansfindthe"goldenyears"tobeanythingbutgolden.Economically,"seniorcitizens"oftenstrugglejusttogetby.Retirement-typicallyatage65-bringsasharpdecreaseinpersonalincome.SocialSecuritybenefitsusuallycannotmakeupthedifference.Olderpeoplemaysufferfrompoornutrition,medicalcareandhousing.Someevenexperienceagediscrimination.In1987,AmericansociologistPatMooredresseduplikeanolderpersonandwanderedcitystreets.Shewasoftentreatedrudely-evencheatedandrobbed.However,dressedasayoungperson,shereceivedmuchmorerespect.Ofcourse,notallelderlyAmericanshavesuchnegativeexperiences.Butoldagedoespresentuniquechallenges.

Despitethechallengestheyface,oldpeopleinAmericagenerallyrefusetogiveuponlife.Theyfinddifferentwaystokeepthemselvesactive.Tohelpthemstayinshape,theymayjoinwalkersclubs,fitnessprogramsandeventhe“SeniorOlympics”.Theycanenjoyhoursatseniorcentersandadultamusementparks.Manyenrollincontinuingeducationprogramstokeeptheirmentalskills.ForAmericans,ifyou’regoingtogrowold,youmightaswelldoitgracefully.

MywifeandIstaredinaweatallthehugebuildings,thecrowdedstreets,theintensityoflife,whenwefirstenteredthecity.WespentmostofourtripexploringBangkok,andthemorewedidso,themorewerealizedwewereonlyscratchingthesurface.

WealsospentalittlelessthanaweekonasmallislandcalledKohSamed,anislandwhosechiefactivityistourism,andwherethereisnothingelsetodobutlayonthebeach,eat,drink,swim,read,andbemerry.Wedidalloftheabove,andlotsofit.Thesandiswhite,theseaisjade,andtheweatherwasperfect.

Bangkokisn‘tsosimpletodescribe,butI‘llofferafewhighlights:

Manyofthestreetsarejustfilledwithtinystallsandcarts,sellingeverythingfromclothestosouvenirstoelectronicstoallkindsofThaifoods.Thefoodisexcellent.

Bangkokhasnotonlyabigrivergoingdownthemiddleofit,butalsonumerouscanalsthatuntilrecentdecadeswereoneofthemainwaterwaysofthecity.Wetookaslowmotorboattourandsawsomeveryinterestingviewsofthecity,missedbymanytourists,throughthecanals.

Bangkokissuchaninternationalcity,andthisisreflectedinthepeople(everykindoflanguageandaccentfilltheair)andinthewonderfulfood.WesamplevariouskindsofThairestaurantsalongwithallkindsofEuropean,Asian,Indian,MiddleEasternfoodandmore.Greatshopping,fromluxurymallstogiganticoutdoormarkets.

Thepeoplearesointeresting,fromtheexcessivelyfriendlytoutstryingtogetustogoplacesforlotsofmoney,tothemanynicepeoplewemetwhoareverygenerouswhenyoushowaninterestintheircountryandculture.

Again,Icouldgoonandon,butlet‘sjustsayIhadapleasanttime.
