IhadbeenstrugglingwithillnesslongbeforeIwasdiagnosed.Inpracticaltermsthediagnosisdidlittletoaidme.Ofcourse,itenabledmetounderstandmybody,mylimitationsandsetmeonacoursetostabilisemysymptoms.Butitbroughtanewdilemma.WhereIhadpreviouslystruggledtoworkwhileill,ignorantofwhymybodywasmisbehaving,Inowhadanameformydailystruggle:

ThejobwastoendwithamonumentalbangwhenIbecamesopoorlyIcouldnolongerfunction.Afewfeverishweeksinbedendedinspecialistappointment,whereIwasdiagnosedwithLupusandrushedintohospitalforfearthatitmayhaveattackedmyinternalorgans.
Thenext12monthswerefilledwithconfusion.Ihadnoideaaboutbenefits,feltalienated(被视为另类)bythemedicalestablishmentandlivedoffmysavingsuntilIwasbroke.IrealisedIneededhelpfrommyfamilyandmovedtoLondon.
AssoonasIfeltbetter,Imarchedintoamarketingrecruitmentconsultancyand,within10minutes,Ihadimpressedtheinterviewerenoughtobeofferedajobwiththeagency.WeagreedonadecentsalaryandItoldhimIhadarthritis(关节炎)andwouldneedtoworkafour-dayweek.

Anestimated10millionpeopleintheUK,or17%ofthepopulationqualifyfordisabilitystatusundertheDDA.Ihaveencounteredanumberofthem:
theliver-diseasedboss;theco-workerwithaheartcondition;andmyasthmatic(哮喘的)trainee-teacherfriend.Nonehaddisclosed(透露)theirconditionstoemployers,andallwerefeelingthestrainofnotdoingso.
ToaccessyourrightsundertheDDAandtorequest“reasonableadjustments”toyourworkingconditionsoryourworkplacerequiresdisclosure.Ihadwarnedmyformeremployeraboutmyconditionbutitservedlittlepurpose.Theywereignorantabouttheirobligationstotheirdisabledstaff.
However,thereareplentyofforward-thinkingorganisationsthathaveinclusiverecruitmentpolicies;arcmorelikelytoemployaworkerwithadisability;andarcmoreawareoftheirlegalduties.Thepublicsectoroutperformstheprivate,butnotalwaysthevoluntary,accordingtostudiesfortheDisabilitiesRightsCommission.
Idecidedtogivethevoluntarysectoragoandwassurprisedtobeofferedflexibleworkingconditionsandothersolutionstomeetmyneedsasanemployee.Butgiventhechoice,Iwouldstillpreferacareerintheprivatesector,whichformeismoredynamic,hasmoreattractivesalariesandoffersbetterprospectsthanthevoluntaryorpublicsectors.
DespitetheadvancesoftheDDA,therewillalwaysbeanarmyofworkerswhowillsoldieron,maybeawareoftheirrightsbutchoosingtoremainsilentforpersonalreasons.Itisimportant,though,torecognisethesignificanceoftheact,theprotectionitaffordsandtheobligationsthatemployershavetousasemployeesandashumanbeings.
