ButTombrokeandranandthat'sthelastthingyoudowithacougar.ThesecondTombrokefree,Jebthrewhimselfonthecougar,justasitjumpedfromtherock.Theyhiteachotherinmid-airandbothfell.ThecougarwasonJebinaflash,forgettingaboutTom,whichwaswhatJebwanted.
Cougarsarenotasbigasmostpeoplethinkandadeterminedmanstandsachance,evenwithjusthisfists.Asthecougar'sclaws(爪子)gotintohisleftshoulder,Jebswunghisfistatitseyesandhithard.Theanimalhowled(吼叫)andputitsheadback.Jebfollowedupwithhisotherfist.Thenoutofthecornerofhiseye,JebsawTom.Theboywasrunningbacktohelphisfather.
“Knife,Tom,”shoutedJeb.
Theboyrantohisfather'sbag,whileJebstartedshoutingaswellashitting,tokeepthecougar'sattentionawayfromTom.TomgottheknifeandranovertoJeb.Thecougarwasmovingitsheadinandout,tryingtofindawaythroughthewallJebwasmakingoutofhisarms.Tomswungwiththeknife,intothecougar'sback.Ithowledhorriblyandranoffintothemountains.
