TheideaofananimalisticsideofhumannatureisforeigntotheNorthAmericanIndianswhoregardanimalsasequalsofman.Theyarenotonlyequaltoman,buttheyareconsideredtobethefoundersandguardiansoftheirtribes.Theraven,theeagle,thebearandotheranimalsalwaysappearinstylizedformsontheirtotempoles.
Eversincethedawnofcivilization,animalshavebeenusedtohelpandtoservemaninmanyways.Sheepandgoatswerebredtoprovidewool,meat,andfat.Largeanimalslikeoxen,waterbuffaloandhorseswereusedtopullploughsandcarryheavyloads.Capableofsensingwaterfromagreatdistanceandgoingdayswithoutwater,camelsprovedtobetheidealanimalforthenomadicpeopleofthedesert.Thedog,knowninEnglish-speakingcountriesas"man'sbestfriend,"isoneofthemostversatileanimals.Dogshavebeenbredtohunt,toguard,toherdsheepandcattle,tofindpeopleinthesnoworintherubbleofearthquakes,toleadtheblind,andtosniffforillegaldrugs.
FormanycenturiesintheWest,itwasthoughtthatanimalsdidnotfeelpainandthattherewasnosuchthingascrueltytoanimals.ItwasinEnglandintheeighteenthcenturythattheadvocacyofanimalrightsbegan.Itshouldbesaid,however,thatrespectfultreatmentofanimalshadexistedintheEastforthousandsofyearsasaresultoftheinfluenceofHinduismandBuddhism.ThefirstnationalanimalwelfareorganizationwascreatedinEnglandin1824underthenameoftheSocietyforthePreventionofCrueltytoAnimals.TheSPCA,asitiscommonlyknown,nowexiststhroughouttheworld.
Theanimalrightsmovementhasgrownconsiderablyinrecentdecades.Asaresultofprotestsbyanimalrightsgroups,huntingofendangeredspecieshasbeenbannedinmostcountries.Manyeffortshavebeenmade,forexample,tostopthekillingofelephantsbyhuntersparticipatingintheivorytrade.Someanimalrightsgroupshavefocusedtheirattentiononthetreatmentofanimalsinscientificresearchandontheuseofanimalsinthetestingofbeautyproductssuchasperfumes,creamsandmakeup.Zoosandpetstoresarenowconstantlyinspectedandcriticizedbyanimalrightsgroups.Manypeopleregardzoosascruelenvironmentsandfavorsafariparkswhereanimalsarefreetoroaminamorenaturalsetting.
Thedestructionofforestsandothernaturalhabitatshasresultedinthedisappearanceofmanyspeciesofanimalsthroughouttheworld.Wildlifeprotectionorganizationshaveconductededucationalcampaignsdrawingpublicattentiontotheseriousdeclineinthebiologicaldiversityoftheplanetasmoreandmorespeciesdisappearbecauseofpollutionandindustrialdevelopment.
