AfterreturningtoEnglandin1929,hemadeasoloflighttoAustraliainabiplane.Twoyearslater,in1931,hepilotedthefirsteast-westflightovertheTasmanSeabetweenNewZealandandAustralia.Hethenplannedtoflyaroundtheworld,buttheplanewasseverelydamagedinanaccidentinJapan.

AfterWorldWarIIhefoundedabusinessinLondon.Takingupoceansailingin1953,hewonthefirstsolotransatlanticracein1960bysailingthe“GipsyMothIV”fromPlymouthtoNewYorkCityin40days.

KnightswerethehighestclassoffightingmeninEuropeduringtheMiddleAges.Therewereotherclassesoffightingmen,suchasthelowlyfootsoldiers.Buttheknights,whofoughtonhorseback,werethearistocratsofthebattlefield.Thegreatheroesofthetime,bothinstoryandinfact,wereknights.

Bytheyear1,500thetimeoftheknightasfightingmanwasover.Butknighthooddidnotdieoutaltogether.TodayinGreatBritain,knighthoodisanhonoraryawardgiventooutstandingpeopleinrecognitionofsomeremarkableworktheyhavedone.Amanwiththerankofknightiscalled“Sir”(prefixedtohiswholenameorgivenname,butnottohissurnamealone),andhiswife“Lady”.Awomanwiththesamerankiscalled“Dame”.
