Blackrhinopopulationbeganfallingrapidlyinthesecondhalfofthe1900sbecauseofpoaching.Infact,somepeoplestillhunttheanimalsattheriskofbeingputintoprison.Andmanyoftheplaceswheretheanimalsusedtoliveinweredestroyedwhenpeoplestartedbuildingfarmsonthegrasslands.Untilthe1960s,about65,000blackrhinoslivedthroughoutmostofAfrica.Today,fewerthan5,000areleft—mostoftheminzoosandwildlifereserves.

SouthAfricahasthelargestpopulationofrhinosintheworld.Poachingisanespeciallybigprobleminthatcountry.Sofar,morethan340rhinoshavebeenkilledthere.Since2003,theBlackRhinoExpansionProjecthasbeenhelpingthesouth-centralblackrhinosinSouthAfrica.Thegroupworkswithlandownerstofindareaswhererhinoscanlivesafelyawayfromhunters.
