Tohelpwiththeprocess,SalzmannreachedouttotheexpertsatBMW’sDesignworkesStudio.Ittooktheteamthreeyearsandmultipletestjumpstoperfectthedesign.Theresultisanupdatedversionofwingsuitwithtwo5-inchpropeller(螺旋桨).Poweredbyabattery,thepropellerscanbecontrolledusinganon/offswitchandevenstoppedmid-flightwingtheemergencybutton,iftheflyerencounteranairplaneoraflockofbirds.

OnNovember6,2020,Salzmann,wearinghishi-techsuit.leapedfromahelicopterfromanaltitudeof10,000feettosoararoundthemountainpeaks.Theexpertpilotfireduptheelectricmotorsandrocketedforward,glidingabovefourmountainpeaks.Thetaskcompleted,thepilotopenedhisparachute(降落伞)andgentlylanded.

In1998,peopleinNaDoi,aquietvillageinnorthwestThailand,noticedthattheirfishcatchesinthenearbyNgaoRiverweredeclining.Thefishtheydidmanagetonetwerealsogettingsmaller.Together,NaDoi’s75householdsdecidedtotryanewsolution:

theywouldsetasideasmallstretchofrivertobestrictlyofflimitstofishing.

NaDoiwasthesecondvillageintheNgaoRivervalleytoadoptthispioneeringapproachtofreshwaterfisheriesmanagement.Sincethelate1990s,atleast50othervillagestherehavedonethesame.Asawhole,theentirelygrassroots-ledreserveshavebeensurprisinglysuccessful,accordingtofindingsrecentlypublishedinNature.Mostimportantly,theThailandcaseprovidesprobablythebestreal-worldproofthatfisheriesreservescanbenefitnotjustoceans,butfreshwater,too.

In2012,AaronKoning,thenadoctoralstudentattheUniversityofWisconsin,beganinvestigatingtheNgaoRivervalleyreservestoseehowwidespreadandsuccessfultheytrulywere.Koningfound,notsurprisingly,thatolderandbiggerreservesweremoresuccessful,becausetheyofferedmoretimeandspace—includingmorekindsofhabitat—inwhichtorebuildfishpopulationsandre-establishrarespecies.Butevenreservesestablishedinthelastcoupleofyearsshowedclearbenefitsfrombeingsparedintensefishingpressure.“Reservesthatwerelocatedclosertoavillagetendedtohaveanadvantage,”Koningsays,“probablybecausevillagerswerebetterabletoenforcetherules.”
