AnewplasmawindtunnelisunderconstructionattheItalianAerospaceResearchCentre(CIRA)locatedatCapua.ItisnamedGHIBLIandtheplasmaisgeneratedbyasegmentedarcheaterwhosepowerisabout2 MW.Suchanewfacilitywillbeabletoperformtestcampaignsonmodelsupto80 mmindiameter,andmaybeusedtodevelopresearchesintheaerospacefieldofthehypersonicplasmaflowsfromthereentrytechnologiestothevalidationofCFDcodesforthetheoreticalpredictionsofaerothermodynamicphenomena.TargetofthepresentpaperisthepresentationofresultsobtainedbymeansofCFDsimulationbyusingthewell-knownFLUENTcode,Suchacodehasbeenusedtosimulatetheaerothermodynamicfieldinsidetheconicalnozzleofthefacilitytoobtainsomeanalyticalcorrelations(fits)betweenthemainaerodynamicparametersatthenozzleexit,suchastheMachnumber,flowdensity,massflowrate,etc.andthereservoirconditionsinsidethearcheatercolumn,totalpressureandtotalenthalpy.Suchfitsallowfasttheoreticalpredictionofthefacilityoperationparametersforgivenreservoirconditions.

Space-borneSyntheticApertureRadarinterferometry(INSAR)isawellknownwidelyusedremotesensingtechniquetogetprecise(sub-centimetric)surfacedeformationmeasurementsonlargeareas(thousandsofkm2)andhighspatialdensityofmeasurementpoints(hundredsperkm2).Inthisworktherecenttechnologicaladvancesofthistechniquearepresented.First,ashortreviewoftheINSARbasicsisdedicatedtoreaderswhoarenotINSARspecialists.Then,ananalysisoftheimprovementofgroundmotionmeasurementofferedbymultiplerepeatedspace-borneSARobservationsgatheredbythenewgenerationofhighresolutionSARsystemsisgiven.AnexampleobtainedwiththerecentGermanTERRASAR-XsystemisshownandcomparedwiththemeasurementsobtainedwiththeelderC-bandRADARSAT-1system.Finally,apossibleprocessingofmulti-temporalanalysisofSARimagesthatallowextractinggroundmotioninformationalsofrompartiallycoherenttargetsisgiven.InthiscasethecoreideaistorelaxtherestrictiveconditionsimposedbythePermanentScattererstechnique.Theresultsobtainedindifferenttest-sitesshowanincreasedspatialdensityofarealdeformationtrendmeasurements,especiallyinextra-urbanareasatthecostofmissingmotionswithstrongvelocityvariation.

Abstract

WithintheSLAMproject(ServiceforLandslideMonitoring),launchedin2003bytheEuropeanSpaceAgency(ESA)thePermanentScatterers(PS)technique,amulti-imageinterferometricapproach,coupledwiththeinterpretationofaerial-photosandopticalsatelliteimages,wascarriedoutforlandslideinvestigations.ThePSanalysiswasappliedataregionalscaleassupportforlandslideinventorymappingandatlocalscaleforthemonitoringofsinglewell-knownslopemovements.FortheintegrationofthePSmeasurementswithinalandslideinventorytheArnoriverbasin(Italy)waschosenastestsiteforthepresenceofahighnumberofmassmovements(todateabout300areasathighlandslideriskandmorethan27,000individuallandslidesmappedbytheinstitutionalauthorities).About350SARimageshavebeeninterferometricallyprocessedbymeansofthePStechnique,withthedetectionofabout600,000PS.Theuseofopticalimagescontributedspatialmeaningtothepoint-wiseinformationprovidedbythePS,makingiteasiertoidentifyterrainfeaturesrelatedtoslopeinstabilityandthelandslideboundaries.Herewedescribetheemployedmethodologyanditsimpactintheupdatingofapreexistinglandslideinventory.6.8%ofthetotalnumberoflandslideswerecharacterizedbygrounddisplacementmeasurementsfromthePS:

6.1%ofalreadymappedlandslidesand0.8%ofnewunstableareasdetectedthroughthePSanalysis.Moreover,mostofthePSarelocatedinurbanareas,showingthattheproposedmethodologyissuitableforlandslidemappinginareaswithaquitehighdensityofurbanization,butthatovervegetatedareasitstillsuffersfromthelimitationsinducedbythecurrentspace-borneSARmissions(e.g.temporalde-correlation).Ontheotherhand,theuseofInSARforthemonitoringofsingleslowlandslidesthreateningbuilt-upareashasprovidedsatisfactoryresults,allowingthemeasurementofsuperficialdeformationswithhighaccuracyonthelandslidesectorscharacterizedbyagoodradarreflectivityandcoherence.

Abstract

Thesolidstatenucleartrackdetection(SSNTD)techniqueisnowawell-establishedtoolforthedetectionofchargedparticleswithstoppingpowergreaterthanacertainthresholdvalue.Beingapassivedetectionsystem,itexistedintheformofprimordialcrystalsandhencequalifiedtoberegardedasthe‘oldest’memberofthenucleardetectionsystems.Sincetheadventofitslaboratoryusein1958,thetechniquewasadoptedbydifferentlaboratoriesatdifferenttimesallovertheworld.PakistanisoneofthecountriesthatestablishedanSSNTD-laboratoryintheearliestdevelopmentalstageofthetechnique.Consequently,significantcontributionsweremadebyasmallbutenergeticgroupofscientiststowardthemethodologyofthetechniqueaswellasitsapplicationsindiverseareassuchasnuclearphysics,cosmology,materialscience,geology,geophysics,bio-medicalphysicsandenvironmentalscience.InthisarticlewewillattempttopresentabriefsummaryoftheimportantadvancesmadeinthedevelopmentofthistechniqueanditsinnovativeapplicationsbyPakistaniresearchersinvariousfieldsofscienceandtechnology.

Aselsewhereintheworld,thetechniqueisnotubiquitousinallnuclearresearchlaboratoriesinPakistanbecauseofthewell-knownlimitationsofthedetectionsystem.However,thenumberofworkersinvolvedinresearchstudieshasbeengrowingovertheyears.Theseincludedboththefreshresearchersaswellasthosewhoshiftedfromotherresearchinterests.ThishasresultedinahealthyreinforcementofthemanpowerengagedinSSNTD-basedresearchwork.Afteraselectivepresentationoftheon-goinginvestigationsbasedontheuseofSSNTDsinPakistan,somecommentsaremadeforthepossiblefuturedirectionsofprogress.
