“Thisisimportantbecauseoralproblemscanimpactself-esteemforchildrenand
leadtoproblemsofeating,speakingandattendingtolearning.”saidMichaelMcGuire,presidentoftheAAP.
Commondentalproblemsseeninchildrenarecavities(龋洞)andgingivitis(龈炎),whicharefoundinthemajorityofU.S.children.“Whentheseproblemsarenotcaughtearlyendtreated,theycandevelopintomoresevereproblemsandcauseunnecessarysuffering,”saidMcGuire.“However,muchofthetime,oralproblemsareavoidableproblems.”
IntheRioGrandeValleyinTexas,agroupofmorethan120dentists(牙医)volunteerstodeliverdentalcaretothousandsoflowin-comechildreneachyearwithits MobileDentalUnitthattravelsfromschooltoschool.
"AccordingtotheSurgeonGeneral’sReport,about37percentofchildrenhavenothadadentalvisitbeforestartingschool,”saidMcGuir.“Whenchildrendon’tseedentists,theymisstheopportunitytohaveproblemscaughtearlybeforetheydevelopintolarger,moreexpensiveproblemstotreat,andparentsmisstheopportunitytolearnhowtopromotegoodoralhabitsintheirchildren.”
