ABSTRACT

ThispaperdealswithevaluationofbenefitsfromtheAHPmethodologythatcanimprovethequalityofthedecisionmakingprocess.Inthisresearcheffort,evaluation（givesecondopinions）ofanother’sassessmentofgoaliscarriedout,wherein,thecriteriaassessmentisdifferentwhilekeepingthealternativesassessmentwithrespecttoeachcriteriaconstant,totestifthepriorityvectorofthealternativesissameordifferent.

1.Introduction

Makingdecisionsinvolveevaluatingtheavailablealternativesandchoosingtherightonethatmeetsadesiredobjective.Underlyingassumptionisourabilitytocompare,andmeasureorassessthevalueofthesealternativeswiththerespecttothegoalathand.Itisoneofmainfunctionsandresponsibilitiesofseniormanagementinorganizations.Decision-makingisafundamentalprocessthatisintegralineverythingwedo（Saaty,2004）.Itisnotsurprisingtoknowthatoneofthemaingoalsofeducationistohelpstudents/participantsinthestudytomakebetterdecisionsandincreaseobjectivityinmakingsuchdecisions.However,subjectivitycannotbecompletelyeliminatedbecauseweinterpretandmakeinferencesbasedonobjectiveassessmentsofthedata.

AnalyticalHierarchyProcess,adecision-makingmethodologydevelopedbySaaty（1987）isanattemptinthisdirection.AHPcanbeusedinanysituationwherethepresenceofmultipleinfluencingfactorsanddecisioncriteriamakeitdifficulttounderstandtheinteractionsamongthemintuitively.InsuchcasesAHPoffersastructuredapproachtoreducethecomplexityandhelpusinmakingadecisionobjectively.

Saaty（2004）arguesthatsubjectivejudgmentsusingqualitativeparametersarenotnecessarilyinferiortophysicalquantitativemeasures.Hecontendsthatphysicalscalemeasurementsonlyhelpininterpretationandinourunderstandinganduseofthethingsthatwealreadyknowhowtomeasure.

Although,AHPispracticedinindustryandacademics,itpresentsafewconcernsandopportunitiesforfurtherresearch.Oneoftheconcernsisthatsubjectivity.Althoughsubjectivitycannotbeeliminatedcompletely,withbetteranalysis,objectivitycanbeimproved.Inthispaper,usingtheAHPmethodology,weproposetoevaluateorprovidesecondopinionofanotherperson’sassessmentofagoaltoimproveobjectivity.Withthisapproach,thesecondopinionofthecriteriaassessmentisdifferentwhilekeepingthealternativesassessmentwithrespecttoeachcriteriathesameandtestifthepriorityvectorofthealternativesissameordifferent.

Theremainderofthepaperpresentsabriefliteraturereviewabouttheanalyticalhierarchyprocessfollowedbyhypothesisofthestudyandresearchdesign.Followingthese,wepresentdatapresentationandanalysis.Weconcludethepaperwithlimitationsandfuturescope.

2.LiteratureReview

TheprimaryobjectiveofAHPistoclassifyanumberofalternativesbyconsideringagivensetofqualitativeandquantitativecriteriaandusingpair-wisecomparisons/judgments.AHPresultsinahierarchicallevelingofthequalitydeterminants,wheretheupperhierarchylevelisthegoalofthedecisionprocess,thenextleveldefinestheselectioncriteriawhichcanbefurthersubdividedintosubcriteriaatlowerhierarchylevelsand,finally,thebottomlevelpresentsthealternativedecisions.

AnalyticHierarchyProcess（AHP）isoneofthemulti-criteriadecision makingmethodsthatwasoriginallydevelopedbySaaty（1987）.Itisamethodtoderiveratioscalesfrompairedcomparisonstodeterminerelativeweightsandusethemforevaluatingalternatives.Theinputcanbeobtainedfromactualmeasurementsuchaspriceandweightorfromsubjectiveopinionsuchassatisfactionfeelingsandpreference.AHPhasaprovisionforasmallinconsistency（10%）injudgmentbecauseitisdifficulttobeabsolutelyconsistent.Theratioscalesarederivedfromtheprincipaleigenvectorsandtheconsistencyindexisderivedfromtheprincipaleigenvectorvalue（Saaty,2008）.

ItiswellknownthatAHPisassociatedwithlargecomputingandsubjectivity（Rang-guo&Yan-ni,2004）.Inanefforttoimprovequalityofdecisions,Stern,Meherez,andHadad（2000）suggestedahybridapproachofusingdataenvelopmentanalysis（DEA）andAHPtotakebestofbothandavoidpitfallsofeachmethod.ThePeters-Zelewski（2008）paperlooksatadiscussionofthepitfallsofAHPfromunderstandingdifferencesbetweenrelativeversusabsolutemeasurements,clusteringofdirectmeasurements,andintegratedviewofinputsandou
