ComputerScienceinterestsmebecauseitincorporatesbothlogicandsystematicworkingwithaformofspeedandautomationthatcouldneverbeachievedbyanindividual.MyfirstexperienceofthiswaswhenIobservedaprogrammedonscreen"turtle"completecomplexmovements;thisshowedmethestronglinkbetweenmathematicalknowledgeanditspracticalapplication.ASComputingfurtheredthis,whichenabledmetoprogrammyownSnake-esquegameathome,showingmehowIcouldapplymathematicalskills,suchasmethodandlogic,tocomputers.Ienjoylookingatasmanyoutcomesaspossibleintermsofaprogram,forexamplehowtheprogramshouldreactifacertaincircumstanceoccurs,regardlessoflikelihood,yetstillmaintainingalevelofefficiency.

ThissummerIattendedacourseabouttheLinuxoperatingsystem.ThisremindedmeofaprojectthatIhadreadaboutseveralyearsagothatwastodevelopanXboxgamesconsoleintoadesktopworkstation.AtthetimeIjudgedthistobesomethingtoocomplicatedandexpensivetoattemptsodismissedit.OvertimeIreadaboutparallelprocessinganditsapplications,oftenfromtheComputerScience4Funmagazine.ThiscombinedtogivemetheconfidencetostartmakingmyownXboxworkstation.However,Isoonrealisedthatthisprojectlackedthecomplexitytochallengemeforverylong,sointhelastcoupleofmonthsIhavebeencreatinganXboxclustersystem.Iintendtohostmyownwebsiteonthisaswellasafewparallelprocessingapplicationsforbenchmarking.

InmyGCSEyearsIdevelopedmodificationsforacomputergameandlearntsomeVisualBasic.FromthisIgainedalimitedknowledgeofprogramming,andtheskillstoteachmyself.RecentlyIwasaskedtoredesignthewebsitefortheWestWiltsU3A,aprojectIammanagingbearinginmindthelimitedskillsoftheenduser.

IattendedaNAGTYmathssummerschoolwhichallowedmetoexperienceawiderangeofmathematicaltopics.ThisyearIattendedVilliersParktoparticipateinanothermathscourse,fromwhichIparticularlyappreciatedalectureonstatisticsasitshowedmehowthesamethingscouldbepresentedinsomanydifferentways.

IhaveparticipatedintheUKMathsChallenge,twiceachievinggold.IenjoytheChallengeasitgivesmetheopportunitytocompletenon-standardproblems.StudyingASLevelMathsandFurtherMathshastaughtmehowtolookataproblemindifferentways,andtotrymanyapproaches;atechniqueIhavefoundmyselfusingrepeatedlyinASComputing.IfoundthedecisionmoduleofmathsstimulatingasputtingthoughtprocessestonumericalsolutionsandoperationsissomethingthatinterestsmeaboutComputerScience.ASPhysicshelpedmedeveloptheabilitytolinkevidencetoexplanation.

AlongsidemymathsandcomputinginterestsIamtakingpartintheDukeofEdinburghSilverawardschemeandamaYoungLeaderwiththelocalScouts.Iplaytheviolaatagrade5levelandamamemberofWestWiltsYouthOrchestra.IhavebeenelectedbystaffandpeerstobePR/Communicationsofficeronthesixthformcommitteeandamemberoftheschoolcouncil.InadditionIspentayearhelpingayoungstudentwithdyslexiadevelophislanguageandreadingskills.ThistermIwillbestagemanagingtheschoolproductionofAMidsummerNight'sDream.IalsoenjoydebatingatModelUnitedNationsconferences,whichinvolvesflexibilityofthought.IkeepuptodatewithNewScientistmagazine,aswellasreadingTerryPratchett'sDiscworldnovels.

AComputerSciencedegreeparticularlyappealstomebecauseithasapracticalvalue,leadingtoavarietyofcareers.Itisasubjectwhichwouldenablemetostretchmyproblemsolvingabilities,bothmathematicallyandanalytically,aswellasequipmewithadiverserangeofskills.Aswellasapassionfortechnology,Ihavearealenjoymentofmaths,sofeelsuchadegreewillchallengeandenthuseme.

Sinceaveryyoungage-whereallmyfriendswereaspiringtobecomefiremen,astronautsandrockstars-Ihavealwaysdreamedofwearingasuittowork.Idon'tknowwhatitwas,butIguessIjustidentifiedallthesemenasbeingtherealplayersintheworld-drivingfastcarsandhittingitoffwithbeautifulwomen.Theseguys-thelawyers,entrepreneursandaccountants-wereallsippingchampagneandlivingthehighlife.Ofcourse,youdon'thavetowearasuittobemakingmoney（lookatSteveJobs,forexample）,it'snotallfunandgames,andyouhavetobedamngoodatwhatyoudo,butmyambitionshaveremainedthesame.ThisiswhatIwanttobe,butmoneyisnolongerthesoleobject,inmyopinion.

Thishasstemmedfrommyupbringing,whereeverymorningCNNisputontheTV,stockportfolioslieinmessystacksaroundthehouseandpoliticalconversationrunsrifeatthedinnertable.EverydayIwouldhearmyfathertalkingabouthisbusinessventuresandgarneredagreatinterest.Tome,thebusinessworldseemedentirelydifferenttoourregularone:

itwasagrandiosebattlefieldofthousandsofopposingteams–aviciousfreeforallwheretheonlyobjectivewastowin.Languagelike“slaughteringthecompetition”wasfrequentlyused,andIinstantlyknewthatthisgamewasmoreintensethananysport,moreexcitingthananyvideogameandmorefulfillingthananyhobby.Ionceeventriedmyhandatbusinessofmyown–sellinggumballsatschool–which,tomysurprise,wasrathersuccessful,ifshort-lived（regulatedintotheground）.

BythetimeIwasbeginningmyIGCSEyearIwasabsolutelyitchingtotakeaBusiness&Managementcourse.Ifeltalotofitcomenaturallytome,rememberingallthetermsandadviceIhadheardfrommyfather.AllalongitwasextremelysatisfyingtoknowthatwhilstIwouldhardlyuseanythingIhadlearntinmath’s（unlessIneedtoknowtheexactanglethatmyladderisat）,nomatterwhatprofessionIwouldtake,Icouldapplythis.Itookpartinstockcompetitions,bothinandoutsideofschool,inanattempttobettermyunderstandingoftheseeminglyconfusingconceptofstockexchange.

Oneofthemostinterestingaspectsofbusinessformeisinternationalmarkets,whichthenextendsintoeconomics.IhaveoftenbeentoldthatoneofmymostvaluablequalitiesisthatIamtri-cultural,comingfromanextremelyinterestingbackground.IhavelivedinSpainmyentirelife,withanAmericanmotherandEnglishfather,whoisacharteredaccountantandpreviouslyownedasuccessfulrecordlabel;henowsellspropertyontherealestatemarket.Ifeelthatthisiswheremuchofmybusinessbackgroundoriginates.AnotherinterestingqualitythathasrubbedoffmyparentsisBuddhism.WhilstamnotafirmbelieverintheBuddhistphilosophies,Ifindmanyofthemextremelycompelling.

OverthecourseoftheIB,Ihavedonemuchtoadvancemyselfinthefieldofpublicspeaking–askillIfindtobeofincreasingimportanceinthemodernbusinessworld.LastyearItookthepositionofpresidentoftheToastmastersInternationalYouthLeadershipprogramandearnedmycertificate.ThiswillbethesecondyearinwhichIwillbeattendingtheannualIMUNconference,whereIhavesignedupforthepositionofchair,andifnot,willrepresenttheWorldBank.LastyearIrepresentedthehighlyunspokencountryofTimorLeste.OverthecourseofthesummerIattendedtheprestigiousGYLCconference,whereItalkedto[insertnameshere]andattendedspeechessuchas[name]****-MasteringtheChallengesofInternationalBusiness,byDrJ.JosephKim,CEOofVGXpharmaceuticals.DuringasimulationglobalsummitIrepresentedFrance,andwasappointedtothedigitaldivide,e-commerceandfreetradecommissions,whereIadvocatedtheviewofprotectionism.ThroughoutbothoftheseconferencesIspokeinfrontofhundredsofotherscholars,which,bytheend,feltperfectlynaturalandcomfortable.Thesevaluableexperiencesgavemeaninvaluableinsightintotherunningofgovernmentsandtheirregulatingbusinessesaswellasallowingmetofurtheradvancemypublicspeakingskills.Ihavealsobeenappointedtheroleofheadprefect–whichentailedanISCOheadprefecttrainingcourse-andmemberofthestudentcouncilinmyschool,andlendahandinmanagingandworkinginourschooltuckshop,whichhaveallhelpedhonemymanagementabilities.

Whilstalloftheseprovidedmewithexcellentskills,overthesummerIhadtheprivilegetogainworkexperiencefromoneoftheleadinglawfirmsinEuropeandthelargestandmosthighlyregardedinSpain–Garrigues.Thisallowedmetogaininsightintohowaninternationalcompanyisrunandmanaged.Thisalsodemonstratedtomewhatitisliketoworkasalawyerinalargefirmandeducatedmeonthedifferentpartsoflawandwhattheyentailandallowedmetousemynear-fluentSpanishinaworkenvironment.ThedepartmentIfoundmostinterestingwasthatofcivillaw–morespecifically,
