Studentsgreatlywelcomegames.Theycancreateacheerfulandlight-heartedenvironmentandarousestudents’interestinlearningEnglish.Gamesareconsideredoneofthemosteffectivewaystoimproveefficiency(效果)inlanguagelearning.Followingaresome50gamesforvariouslevelsofEnglishstudents.Icollectedsomeofthemandcreatedothers.
VocabularyandPhraseGames
1.AGameofCollocationCards
Aim:
Toletstudentsreviewandmemorizecollocations(搭配).
Preparation:
Makeasetofcardswiththeverbs(orverbphrases)suchastake,have,do,play,make,andgive.Prepareasecondsetwithnouns(nounphrases)suchashomework,ameeting,atrip,atest,alectureandbasketball.
Procedure:
Twoormorethantwostudentscanplaythisgame.Thepurposeistoformacollocation.
1)Putallthosecardsinrandomorderinapileonthetablewithstudentssittingaround.
2)Inturns,eachstudenttakes6cardsfromthepileonebyone.Thenonestudenttakesonecardfromthepile.Thestudentkeepsitifhe/shefindsacollocationwithoneofthecardsinhishandorhe/shethinkshe/shecanfindacollocationeasilywiththiscardlater.Otherwise,she/hegivesittothenextperson.
3)Thenextpersonkeepsit,ifhe/shefindsacollocationwithoneofthecardsinhis/herhand.
4)Thenthestudentchoosesoneofthedifficultcardsinhis/herhandandgivesittothenextperson.
5)Ifhe/shecannotformacollocation,he/shetakesanothercardfromthepile.Thenextpersondoesthesameuntiloneofthemformsthreecollocations.
Thefirstpersonthatformsthreecorrectcollocationswins.
Variation:
Youcanplaythisgamewithprepositionalphrasesandadjectivephrases,aswellasverbphrasesoryoucanputallthesetogether.
2.WordSpellingCards
Aim:
ToreviewandmemorizetheEnglishwordsstudentshavelearned.
Preparation:
Makeatleast100cardswiththefollowingwrittenonthem:
letters,roots,suffixes(词缀),suchas,-tion,-ment,and-orprefixes,suchas,-un,-imand–ir,clustersofvowels,suchas,-ow-,-ightand-oo-andconsonants(辅音),suchas,th-,ch-andsp-.
Procedure:
Twoormorethantwostudentscanplaythisgame.
1)Putallcardsinrandomorderinapileonthetablewithstudentssittingaround.
2)Eachstudenttakes4,5,or6cardsfromthepileonebyone.(Studentsdeterminethenumberofcardstheyholdintheirhandsbeforethegamestarts.Thebiggerthenumber,theeasierthegameis.)
3)Theobjectistoconstructmeaningfulwords(awordfoundinthedictionary)byputtingthecardstogether.Whensuccessful,thestudentshowsthewordtotheotherplayersandputsthecardsaside.Atthesametime,he/shegetsthesamenumberofadditionalcardsfromthepile.
4)Thefirstplayertriestoformmorewords,whichhe/sheshowstotheotherplayers.Ifhe/shecannotformameaningfulword,he/shecantakeanothercardfromthepile.
5)Ifhe/shestillfailstoformaword,he/shechoosesonefromhis/hercardsandgivesittothenextperson.
6)Thenextpersoncangetthiscardifhe/shecanformawordwiththeothercards.Eachtimeawordisformed,thestudentshowsthecard(s)totheotherplayersandputsthecard(s)aside.
7)Iftheplayercannotformawordwiththecardgivenbythepreviousplayer,he/shecangetonefromthepileandtrytoformaword.Again,ifaplayerfailstoformaword,he/sheselectsoneofhis/hercardsandgivesittothenextperson.Thenextpersonwilldothesame.
Finally,thepersonwhogetsthemostmeaningfulwordswins.
3.PrepositionCards
Aim:
Topractiseprepositions.
Preparation:
Writeanumberofprepositions(say,10–20)onseparatecards.Eachstudenthasasetofthecards.
Procedure:
Theaimistomakeupsentencesusingcommonprepositions.
1)Studentscanholdthecardsintheirhandsorputthemonthedesk.
2)Theteachersaysanoun,averboranadjectiveoraphrase(orwritesontheblackboard.)
3)Thestudentsthinkofasentencequicklyusingoneoftheprepositionsontheircards.Thestudentwhothinkshis/hersentenceisrightcanraisehis/herhandandtheteachernominates(指定)him/her.He/Shereadsoutthesentence.Iftheteachersays"correct"(thesentenceiscorrectingrammarandmeaning),thestudentcanputthatprepositioncardaside.
4)Theprocedureisrepeated.Thestudentwhosurrendersallhis/hercardsfirstwillwin.
4.Bingo
Level:
Absolutebeginnertolowerintermediate
Aim:
torevieworpreviewletters,orvocabulary
Materials:
itemlist,bingocards(studentscanmakethese)
Procedure:
Drawa9-squarebox(asintic-tac-toe)andaskstudentstodrawapicturewiththetargetwordsineachbox.Youmightdraweachpictureontheboardinrandom(随机)orderandhavethestudentsdrawthemintheirgrid.(Thisisveryusefulsinceyoucanreviewthewordstogetherwiththewholeclassasyougoalongandhelpstudentswithideasofhowtodrawthem).Thendrawthepicturesinyourboxontheboardandaskthestudentstochooseaword.Choosethestudentsatrandom.Whentheygetabingo(anythreeinarow),theygetateampoint,acardorareward.Avariationmaybetorewardthemonlyiftheygetabingobeforeyou.Thismakesitmorechallengingandcoversmorevocabulary.
5.Slapit
Aim:
torecognizewordsandlistenforrelevantinformation
Preparation:
asetof10-15picturesofdifferentkindsoffooditemsforeachteamof4to6people
Procedure:
Puttheitemsonadeskandthestudentssitaroundthedesk.Theteacherdescribesthefooditem.Whenastudenthasananswer,she/heslapsthecardandsaysthewordaloud.Ifthestudentiscorrect,he/shegetsateampoint.Ifthestudentiswrong,he/sheisoutofthegame.Alternatively,ineachgroupeachstudentplaysindependently.Ifthestudentslapsthecorrectpicture,he/shekeepsthecardasapoint.Thepersonorteamwiththemostcards/pointswins.
6.Hangman
Level:
Absolutebeginnertolowerintermediate
Aim:

Materials:

Procedure:
First,theteacherthinksofawordandwritesthesamenumberofdashes,astherearelettersinthewordontheboard.
Then,studentsbegintocalloutlettersfromthealphabet.Whenastudentguessesacorrectletter,he/shewillputtheletterinitsproperplace.Thelettermayberepeated.Ifaletterthatisinthewordhasnotbeenmentioned,theteacherwilldrawonestrokeforthehangman.Iftheycanguessthewordbeforethepictureofthehangmanisfinished,theywillwin.Otherwisetheywilllose.
Variation:
Thisworksbestwithphrases,notindividualwords.Scoringneednotbeahangedman.Itcanbeanypicture,orwordthathasabout10parts.Thepicturescanbedrawnbitbybitorerasedbitbybit.
7.WordShark.(Similartohangman)Similarlyconfusing
Aim:
topractisevocabulary.
Procedure:
Insteadofamanbeinghung,youcandrawamandangling(悬浮)fromacliff,withtheocean,completewithoneravenousshark,underneathhim.Whenthefirstincorrectletterisguessed,themanbeginshisdescenttowardtheshark,who,fiveorsixwrongguesseslater,willeathim.Graphically,(图形上)IfindWordSharkmoreinterestingthanHangman.
8.Scramble
Aim:
toreviewvocabulary
Procedure:
Youfirstwriteoneortwolettersinthecentreoftheblackboard.Thenaskthestudentsonebyonetoformameaningfulwordbyputtinganotherletterontheleftorright,overorunderthegivenletter.Thestudentwhofailstoformameaningfulwordlosesonepoint.
9.MusicalChairswithaTwist
Aim:
toreviewvocabulary
Preparation:
allthechairsarearrangedinacircleandatagwiththetargetvocabulary(i.e.jobs)isplacedoneachchair
Procedure:
Playmusicandhavethestudentsmarchinacircle.Whenthemusicstops,thestudentsallgoforthechairs.Thereisachairforeachstudentexceptone.ThentheIT(personinthemiddle)canaskanyonesittingdown,"Whoareyou?
"Iftheyknowwhatthetagontheirchairrepresents,theyremainseated.Ifnot,thatstudentbecomesIT.Thisiscontinued3timesandthenthemusicisplayedagain.Thestudentslikethisgameanditreviewsvocabularyverywell.
10.LastLetter
Aim:
toreviewvocabulary
Procedure:
First,haveastudentsayaword.Forexample:
"apple."Thenhavethenextstudentsayawordthatbeginswiththelastletterofthelastword.("apple""elephant")andsoonthrougheveryoneintheclass.Thiscanhelpyoutoknowthekindsofwordsyourstudentsknow,whichhelpscommunicationwiththem.Youcanalsouseaballtodoitorascrewed-uppieceofpaper.Theteacherthrowstheballtoonestudentandsaysawordsuchas"dog".Thestudentmustreplywithawordstartingwith"g,"suchas"girl".Whenanswered,theballisthrownbacktotheteacheranditisthenthrowntothenextstudent,whocontinues.
