In1945,CastrobeganstudyinglawattheUniversityofHavana,wherehebecameinvolvedinstudentactivism,andtheviolentgangsterismculturewithintheuniversity.Passionateaboutanti-imperialismandopposingU.S.interferenceintheCaribbean,heunsuccessfullycampaignedforthepresidencyoftheFederationofUniversityStudentsonaplatformof“honesty,decencyandjustice”.CastrobecamecriticalofthecorruptionandviolenceofPresidentRamonGrau’sgovernment,deliveringapublicspeechonthesubjectinNovember1946thatreceivedcoverageonthefrontpageofseveralnewspapers.
