Everyyear,Americansthrowawayabout160milliontonsofthattotal,plasticsmakeuplessthan8%,paperabout36%,andglassandmetalabout20%,allbyarenaturallylighter,butstill,whenpressedtogether,accoutforonlyabout20%byvolume.
Asaresult,inthepast10yearstheUnitedStates’wastedisposalgroundshavedecreasedfromabout18,500to6,fiveyears2,000morewillclose.
