”Irememberbeingstartledandconfusedbyherquestion.I’dneverbeenparticularlyinterestedinplayingwiththeotherchildren.Ithadn’t,tillthen,occurredtomethatthatwaseitheroddorsomethingwrongwithme.Norhaditoccurredtomethattheydidn’t“wanttoplaywith”me.Myfirstconsciousmemoryoffeelingdifferentwasintheforthgrade.Atthewardrobe,listeningtoclassmatesjoking,chatteringandlaughingwitheachother,IrealizedIhadn’taclueaboutwhatwassofunnyorhowtoparticipateintheireasychatter.TheyseemedtoliveinauniverseaboutwhichIknewnothingatall.Itriedtoactlikeothersbutitwassodifficult.Ifeltconfusedanddisoriented.Iturnedbacktomyinnerworld:

readingbooks,writinganddaydreaming.Myinwardnessgrewmeinwaysthatcontinuedtomovemefurtherawayfromtheworldofmyagepeers.Theeasyflowofcasualsocialchathasremainedforeverbeyondmyreachandbeyondmyinterest,too.

”Ialmostfroze.Ifelthelplessandunabletodefendmyself.WhenIlookedatthenumberplate,IsawthatitwasaGermannumberplate.Thismeansthattheinsultingpersonhimselfwasaforeignerinthiscountry!

Howcouldhedareinsultmelikethis?

IfeltthatIwantedtokillthisman.WhenIrecoveredIwasabletothinkaboutitmoreclearly.Theseracistpeoplearejuststupidanddonotknowanythingaboutlife.

Howcouldyouproveitwasn’tyouwhocommittedthecrime?

Nick:

Frankly,Ineverdid.Isimplypaidtheamountowedandallthechargesweredismissed.Itwasreallyadebttoacasinoand,althoughitwasafelony,alltheywantedwastheirmoney.

Melanie:

Whew!

Forme,perhapsthemostalarmingaspectofyourstoryisthatyouhadtospendseveraldaysinjail—inspiteofthefactthattheyknewthatthepersonwhocommittedthefraudwasofadifferentracethanyou.Thatistrulyscary.

Nick:

Yes.Peoplesufferbecauseothersstealtheiridentitiestoworkillegally.Someoneusedanother’sidentityforyearsandruinedtheircredit.Whentheirkidswanttogettheirfirstcarsorstudentloansittakesthemyearstosettlethedamage.

Melanie:

Didtheycatchthepersonwhousedyouridentitytocommitthecrimes?

Nick:

Yes.Hewasputinjailforidentityfraud.

Takesportforexample.Thepinnacleoffootball,theWorldCup,wasrifewithcheating.Whetherpretendingtobehurtordenyingahandball,footballerswilldoanythingforafree-kickorapenaltyshot.FrenchplayerHenrydeniedcheatingtowinthefree-kickwhichledtohisside’ssecondgoalintheir3-1victoryoverSpain.Whateverthenationalitythere’sonecommonstrategy:
