Thestudy,publishedintheonlineissueoftheAmericanJournalofPreventiveMedicine,foundthatabout40,000patientsweretreatedinUSemergencydepartmentsforrockclimbing-relatedinjuriesbetween1991and2012.Themostcommontypesofrockclimbing–relatedinjurieswerefractures(骨折)andsprains(扭伤).Theanklewasthemostcommonbodyparttobeinjured(40%).Climbersinthestudyrangedinagefrom2to74,withanaverageageof26.Thestudyalsofoundthatwomentookupaquarteroftheinjuries.

Fallsweretheprimaryreasonforinjurywithoverthree-quartersoftheinjuriesoccurringastheresultofafall.Theseverityoffall-relatedinjurieshadalottodowiththeheightofthefall.Patientswhowereinjuredafterfallingfromaheightover20feetwere

morelikelytobetreatedthanpatientswhowereinjuredfallingfrom20feetorlower.

“Wefoundthattheclimberswhofellfromheightshigherthan20feettookup70percentofthepatientstreatedforarockclimbing-relatedinjury,”explainedthestudyauthorLaraMcKenzie,PhD,directorattheCenterforInjuryResearchandPolicyatNationwideHospital.“Thistrend,combinedwiththefactthatrockclimbershaveahigherhospitalizationratethanothersportsandrecreationalinjuries,demonstratestheneedtoincreaseinjurypreventioneffortsforclimbers.”
