WhenIwas27yearsold,Ileftaverydemandingjobinmanagementconsulting,forajobthatwasevenmoredemanding:

teaching.IwenttoteachseventhgradesmathintheNewYorkCitypublicschools.Andlikeanyteacher,Imadequizzesandtests,igaveouthomeworkassignments.Whentheworkcameback,Icalculatedgrades.WhatstruckmewasthatI.Q.wasnottheonlydifferencebetweenmybestandmyworststudents,someofmystrongestperformersdidnothavestratosphericI.Q.Scores,someofmysmartestkidsweren’tdoingsowell.Andthatgotmethinking,thekindsofthingsyouneedtolearninseventhgrademath,sure,they’rehard:

ratios,decimals,theareaofaparallelogram,buttheseconceptsarenotimpossible.AndIwasfirmlyconvincedthateveryoneofmystudentscouldlearnmaterialiftheyworkedhardandlongenough。

SoIleftclassroom,andIwenttograduateschooltobeeapsychologist.Istartedstudyingkidsandadultsinallkindsofsuperchallengingsettings,andineverystudymyquestionwaswhoissuessfulhereandwhy.MyresearchteamandIwenttoWestPointMilitaryAcademy,wetrytopredictwhichcadetswouldstayinmilitarytrainingandwhichwoulddropout.WewenttotheNationalSpellingBee,andtriedtopredictwhichchildrenwouldadvancefarthestinpetition.Westudiedrookieteachersinreallytoughneighborhoods,askingwhichteachersarestillgoingtobehereinteachingbytheendoftheschoolyear.Andofthose,whowillbethemosteffectiveatimprovinglearningoutesfortheirstudents.Wepartneredwithprivatepanies,askingwhichofthesesalespeopleisgoingtokeeptheirjobs,andwho’sgoingtoearnthemostmoney?

Inallthoseverydifferentcontexts,onecharacteristicemerged,asasignificantpredictorofsuess,anditwasn’tsocialin___igence,itwasn’tgoodlooks,physicalhealth,anditwasn’tI.Q.,itwasgrit.Gritispassionandperseveranceforverylong-termgoals.Gritishavingstamina,gritisstickingwithyourfuture,dayin,dayout.Notjustfortheweek,notjustforthemonth,butforyearsandworkingreallyhardtomakethatfutureareality.Gritislivinglifelikeit’samarathon,notasprint.Afewyearsago,IstartedstudyinggritintheChicagopublicschools.Iaskedthousandsofhighschooljuniortotakegritquestionnaires,andthenwaitedaroundmorethanayeartoseewhowouldgraduate,turnsoutthatgrittierkidsweresignificantlymorelikelytograduate,evenwhenImatchedthemoneverycharacteristicIcouldmeasure,thingslikefamilyines,standardizedachievementtestscores,evenhowsafekidsfeltwhentheywereatschool.Soit’snotjustatWestPointortheNationalSpellingBeethatgritmatters,it’salsoinschool,especiallyforkidsatriskfordroppingout.Tome,themostshockingthingaboutgritishowlittleweknow,howlittlescienceknowsaboutbuildingit.
