Jasonwasnewamongthegroup,withtheleastexperienceand,at43,olderbyadecadeormore.Itwashisfriend Andrew Munoz,33,whointroducedhimtothesport.UnlikeJason,Andrewwasanexpertcaver-aformercavingguide,actually.

Theyhikedabitbeforecomingtothedoor,whichsatintheground—you’dmissitifyouweren’tlookingforit.Itwas10a.m.Withtheirwaylightedby headlamps,theywalkeddownanarrow passage studdedwithsharprocks.Thesilencewasbrokenbyadrip-drip-dripfromabove.Soonthedrip turnedinto alightbutsteadyflow,andtheywerewadingin water uptotheirankles,thentotheirshins.

Two hours later,theyapproachedoneofthefeaturesthatmadethecaveunique:

anarrowpassagenotbigenoughtostandupinthatledintoashort,tightdownhill.Thishadaname:

Bastard’sCrawl.Fourstreamsmethere,andindeed,thewaterwasflowingmorequickly.Thesoundofthewaterhadturnedintoaroar.WhentheyfinallynearedthetopoftheCrawl,therewerebarelyfourinchesofairleftbetweenthewaterandtheceiling,notenoughforthemtokeeptheirheadsuptobreathe.Theycametoterrifyingrealizationthattheywere indanger!
